Hello,
I'm a new member, and found this site while searching for some information on a bumper jack I'd like to restore. There are a few threads detailing some nifty floor jacks, and now I'll end up looking for one of those to restore too! The jack I've acquired is marked AJAX, and the instruction label describes using the air control valve to raise and lower the vehicle. I'm embarrassed to admit that I can't even find an air line connection. I haven't looked it over very carefully due to storage and weather concerns. (NH) From what I've learned so far, Ajax was either a division of Walker, or was acquired by them. If anyone is familiar with these, or could direct me to some information about them, I'd appreciate it. I think they're also sometimes called end lifts.
Thanks,
Ron

Ron,

Walker bought Ajax in 1929 and operated it as a wholly owned subsidiary. They did not re-brand their products as Walker products until 1946.

I'd be VERY interested in seeing a photo of your jack, especially the label and any markings.

Hello,

I'll get some photos posted tonight. If you've got any degree of familiarity with this thing, I'd be grateful for a push in the right direction. Even though I don't drive any vehicles that can be lifted by the bumpers, the arms on this thing look like they'd reach in to some other acceptable lift points. Or, I could lift at both the front and rear notches in the rocker panels at the same time and lift one whole side of the car at once. The restoration is (will be) the main enjoyment anyway.
Thanks,
Ron

Ron,

Honestly, I don't know anything about it. I collect WWII-era screw jacks. Ajax made one that was issued to late war jeeps, but examples of jacks that match the Willys drawings thought to be the right jack are not embossed with any Ajax markings and don't have any foil decals either. So I'm very curious to see what the markings on your jack look like, even if it's a different jack, and probably from a different era.

Lug,
I'm going to try to download some photos here. If the dates you mentioned earlier are correct, then I've got to assume that this item is from before 1946.
If I get the mechanical restoration underway, I'll trace and try to duplicate the decals and labels. I've got to wait for some better weather though. Ten degrees and falling, with 35mph gusts.
If anyone else out there knows anything about this jack, I hope to hear from you.
Thanks in advance,

I think that photos have to be hosted on a website (i.e., imgur, photobucket, etc). I could be wrong, but that's the only way I know how to do it, and I do it regularly. Once it's hosted somewhere, you paste the link between the following html code (remove the spaces): [ img ] link [/ img ]

Lug,

Sorry that attaching photos is so complicated. If I don't figure it out, I'd be willing to send them directly to your e-mail. If I can get some help getting this monster into the basement, I'll start dis-assembly.
Let me know
Ron

Hi Lug,

I'm working with Lazzar's to identify and hopefully buy restoration parts for the bumper jack. I've got it torn down and will get info to you as the process advances. No luck with the e-mail address you PM'd me.
Regards,
Ron

Real easy to add pics, use the "go advanced" tab instead of "post quick reply", then click on manage attachments and add the pics from your computer. Where's Outlaw when you need him?

Hello Lug,

Here's another attempt with those photos. I've got the seal kit on the way, and I'm already painting some of the parts.
See ya,

i've got one of these looks almost identical but its got a different style lifting arm. Its a walker 99, needs a rebuild kit for sure at the min. We use them to lift the back of a dirt track racecar in a hurry. Has anyone ever converted them to air?
