Alarm Advice

Any of you guys install your own alarm system ?

Any recommendations ? How would you handle motion detection in the garage with a car coming in ?

You will either have to disarm it or have a long delay to get out of the car to do it.You can link a remote wireless key fob for the security system to arm/ disarm and open/close the door,just takes more pieces and more money!

I wouldn't use a motion detector in a garage because of the possibility of birds, bats or other little critters getting inside. Put switches on the doors and windows instead. Also, think about including a heat detector to alert you in the case of a fire. Car exhaust or general dust or smoke from working out there will set off a smoke detector.

I did my own install and have a motion detector in the garage on a delayed entry so I have time to get to the wall key pad to disarm. But usually I use the keyless remote for disarming before driving into the garage. I also have the heat detecter as suggested by Stuart. I have had no issues with the motion detector causing false alarms.

I've been wondering about the same thing. Someone recommended the wireless systems at www.X10.com they have an auto dialer so they will call you rather than being monitored. Seems like it would work well, the only thing I don't like is that each device (motion sensor, etc.) is wireless so they need batteries. I'd like to find something simular that is hard wired up to the central unit so there is only one unit that has batteries. I have a hard enough time remembering to change the batteries on my smoke detectors.

Yes, excellent.
I have installed a lot of car alarms and two house alarms, but reading yours helped me a lot.
Putting in a new alarm on the shop, getting new ideas.
Don't care for my 25 buck a month local monitoring myself.
