green.bubbly,

The area over the overhangs is a long hallway, extending the full width of the garage. Above the tall door, this hallway lets light into the high bay, and will eventually be equipped with a comfortable chair and light, as a reading nook.

The remainder of the long hallway will have shelves on both sides of the hallway (some shelves for long items like moulding, pipes, and other long stock, other shelves for a ton of car magazines). The mezzanine storage area with the shelves that is shown in the photo sits above the front half of the 2-door bay, and adjacent to the long hallway. The rear half of that bay has clearance for eventual car storage lifts.

Hope that answer your question...

Scuderia-F1,

i meant to say that the Volvo is a 1970 model bought new in Canada (it was built two years after Volvo stopped importing the 122S into the USA). It may be one of only a few 1970's of this model in the country; I haven't seen or read of any others.

Nice place.

Knowing how $$ stuff is here and how hard it is to find a contractor that will not 1/2 *** things brings even more appreciation on my part.

I had a "pro" paint my garage and a freaking 6 year old with a case of finger paints could have done better. He said he could "fix"... Yeah right. Can't do it right the first time, what would make me think you could on the 2nd?
I paid him 1/2 of what I owed and told him to never come back.

nate379,

I had a fine general contractor -- Jay Marvin of Marvin Woodworks in Anchorage. If you know of anyone in the area with a house or garage project, I'd be happy to recommend him.

Problem I has is many of my things are small projects and for 99% of the contractors, not worth their time.

Example I want to have a "table" built in my house off the bar height counter in the kitchen. It's probably a day work of work and so far no one wants to touch it. My finish carpentry isn't that great so I don't want to attempt it (not to mention I have many other things I should finish first)

Awesome projects and even better toy collection. That ****** Cosworth must be VERY rare in America as they are pretty rare in the UK. Those off road vehicles look like great fun. Do you have a photos with deep snow surrounding the place?

The views look stunning

Alaskossie, that is quite the Mahal you have there! Please keep us posted on your progress.

Do you have any threads on the web detailing your 'toys'? The Unimog has always been to me, the ultimate big boys' toy. Of course in the frozen north, it's probably just what's needed to go to the grocery store for a case of Moose Drool beer. :)

Wow, what a group of cars, I love the unimog and lotus 7, to see it in one place, very cool.

The walls look good too, is it lacquered sheets of plywood?

Sorry,

No web pages yet on my 1980 Unimog DoKa, or on my two other ex-military trucks (1975 Volvo 6X6 and 1990 MWG Esarco 8X8) not shown in the earlier photos -- since I can't get them in the garage with the 'Mog there.

(Photos of these two below).

I'm planning on some outside covered storage next to the garage, to be built next summer, for the two other ex-military vehicles. I plan to place a 20-foot Conex at each end with roll-up garage doors installed, and with a span of trusses and a metal shed roof between, to cover the two trucks. The Conexes will be used to store firewood, garden tools, brush mower, tractor-snowplow, etc.

It's a real problem keeping all my wheels in running order; the 122S Volvo, the ****** Cosworth, and the MWG Esarco need minor to major work to get them on the road again.

CaptainKarl, the plywood on the interior walls is 1/2" ACX mahogany veneer, with clear lacquer, 8 feet high, with Sheetrock above. (Some of the adjacent panels in fact turned out to be book-matched, as installed). I was originally going to paint the plywood white, but it looked so warm and nice in natural finish, that we just clear-lacquered them.

nonhog,

Neither the civilian version nor the military version of the Volvo C303 4X4, nor the military 6X6 (there was no civilian 6X6) had the diagonal Volvo grille stripe as seen on Volvo's HD trucks. But I plan to add one to mine.....

Portland, yeah, that one.

Fly me up there and I'll take care of that for ya -- I know a thing or 2 about Volvos :D

That is, as long as you don't mind me wandering around the garage constantly ogling all the other toys in there!

Not too many places in Alaska that don't have a nice view... even in "Los Anchorage" :lol_hitti

your place has no view nate and your "valley" construction is down right an insult to a real craftsman built home, this guys place is amazing. I would love to work where he does to be able to afford this type life style.

Simply awesome garage space that integrates perfectly with house design, especially considering size of each. Then your unique vehicles are Over The Top . . . nice!!

From pictures, can't tell whether garage is connected to house?? With their close proximity, do you have a breezeway between?? Or do you have a James Bond 007 hidden underground tunnel . . . . any pics??

Thanks for sharing . . . . we like it!!

That's a nice ****** Cosworth in one of those pictures. How did you come across that in Alaska? They are super rare in the lower 48 so I assumed they where rare in all 50 states.

BigRed,
Not to get too far off track, but attached are photos of my most heavy-duty 4WD (a 1980 Mercedes Benz Unimog 406 ex-German AF aircraft tug with 22-ton towing capacity), my 1975 Volvo 6WD, and my 1990 MWG Esarco 8X8. The Esarco is one of only 4 made (and 3 surviving), is Land-Rover based, and has 8WD and 4-wheel steering.

The high bay of the new garage will only be large enough to contain one of these at a time while undergoing restoration, so a covered storage area beside the garage is being planned for next year.

Damn I want the mog. You have a awesome setup.
