I thought I would start this thread as a focal point to share information about LISTA cabinets. We, as many of you know, are LISTA distributors as well as Factory Authorized Installers. We are the installation company that Lista corporate uses to install to their direct customers. I am also at the LISTA factory every two weeks processing our Junkyard Specials so it is safe to say that we know a lot about LISTA cabinets. Hopefully we can share our knowledge, and the knowledge of other GJ members, to help others with LISTA questions.

Let me start by addressing OLD vs. NEW LISTA cabinet designs, prompted by a GJ members call this morning.

OLD vs. NEW LISTA cabinets

About 5 years ago, LISTA changed the drawer and housing designs to incorporate a new drawer suspension system. Dimensions changed on cabinet housings and drawers so the drawers and housings between OLD vs. NEW are NOT interchangeable.

OLD Drawer Design: The OLD drawers used a suspension system with a tray under the drawer. This tray uses steel roller bearings as shown in the first two pictures. When purchasing an OLD design cabinet make sure that the roller bearings are not worn out. These bearings are no longer available from LISTA or the actual bearing manufacturer.

NEW Drawer Design
: The NEW drawers use a totally different suspension system; one that uses a Polyoxymethylene (POM) bearing and no tray underneath. All of the suspension is handled on just the sides. While the new bearings might look like plastic, they are really a high tech solution to traditional bearings. In the five years this has been in use we have not seen any failures or excessive wear. The remaining pictures show the NEW suspension system.

Retrofitting NEW into OLD : The NEW suspension can not be used with an OLD drawer since the NEW housing is a bit narrower on the inside and the suspension tracks would be too far inboard for the OLD drawer design to work properly with the new suspension. Additionally the NEW suspension can not be used with a NEW drawer in an OLD cabinet. This is due to two important facts: 1) The NEW housing is narrower on the inside and 2) The drawer Z-channels on the sides are different. Here enters the HYBRID solution.

Hybrid Solution: The HYBRID solution of putting NEW suspension in an OLD cabinet involves a special HYBRID drawer design. Lista has an option whereby a NEW drawer can be made with a different Z-channel that will allow it to be used with NEW suspension parts in an OLD cabinet housing.

When considering the purchase of a used LISTA cabinet, take into considerations the quality of the roller bearings. OLD cabinets that are heavily used could have bearing failure or be close to bearing failure. You can not purchase replacement drawer trays or bearings so your purchase might not be such a good deal if the cabinet is all worn out. You would have to change both the drawer and the suspension to correct a bad bearing issue.

If you have any questions or would like me to discuss a particular LISTA related topic, either post it here or feel free to contact me directly.

Joe

Another tidbit about LISTA Cabinets; deciphering model names.

LISTA Cabinets come in a variety of heights and depths:

FOOTPRINTS
: There are 13 different footprints of LISTA cabinets; 7 Full Depth (28-1/2") and 6 Shallow Depth (22-1/2"). These are the footprint Model designators.

NW - 16-7/8"W x 28-1/2"D
MP - 22-3/16"W x 28-1/2"D
SC - 28-1/4"W x 28-1/2"D
EW - 34-1/4"W x 28-1/2"D
HW - 40-1/4"W x 28-1/2"D
MW - 47"W x 28-1/2"D
DW - 56-1/2"W x 28-1/2"D

NS - 16-7/8"W x 22-1/2"D
CL - 22-3/16"W x 22-1/2"D
ST - 28-1/4"W x 22-1/2"D
ES - 34-1/4"W x 22-1/2"D
HS - 40-1/4"W x 22-1/2"D
MS - 47"W x 22-1/2"D

HEIGHTS: The overall height in inches is actually specified in the part number in millimeters of drawer opening. The actual height is the drawer opening plus 100 mm (for the top and bottom rails)

300 - 15-3/4" (400 mm)
450 - 21-5/8" (550 mm)
600 - 27-1/2" (700 mm)
750 - 33-1/2" (850 mm)
900 - 39-3/8" (1000 mm)
1050 - 45-1/4" (1150 mm)
1225 - 52-3/16" (1325 mm)
1350 - 57-1/8" (1450 mm)
1525 - 64" (625 mm)

The basic part number for a cabinet is therefore FOOTPRINT:HEIGHT. Examples: SC900, DW1350, etc.

More on fitting drawers to a cabinet later .....

I gave Joe a call this morning to get price and availability on some parts for the Lista cabinets I picked up recently. Mine are ST900's. I had a friend who owns a body shop give them some fresh paint. I made a few repairs to the actual cabinet and he dropped them off the other day. They are not perfect but they will be great (for me) when I'm done. I've been working on figuring out everything I need and thought it may be easier to replace a couple of the drawer carriages that require a lot of work.

My neighbor who owns a body shop gave them a fresh coat of paint and dropped them off the other day. I've spent some time assessing the damage and here's some of what I found. I also have a couple drawers where metal to metal contact at the slide has worn them down to thickness of paper. Repairable though. These two Listas were used in a casino cash room. I was hoping to find a few 20's at the very least, but no such luck. So............ if buying used, expect some carnage.

May I ask why Lista no longer sells the bearings and hardware (drawer trays, etc) for the older cabinets, if the new ones are only 5 years old? I assume that most Listas out there are older models?

Yeah I was wondering the same thing and how the lifetime warranty would work if they can replace just one drawer or carriage.

I would think that if you needed a warranty repair, Lista would supply you with a new hybrid setup and drawer. The damage to my drawer carriages seems to have occurred due to bearing failures and not replacing them in time, to prevent the damage.

The spares for the OLD drawer suspension pieces ran out. For warranty purposes LISTA would replace the entire drawer assembly with a new u-channel, glide, and drawer assembly.

One of my customers had a 10+ year old cabinet that was loaded with heavy hardware. The drawers were probably opened at least 10-20 times a day during that time and the bearings were bound up with grease. Once we cleaned them we noticed they were worn. Lista replaced the drawers without question.

In looking at Frankush's pictures, the wear also effected the U-channels and most likely the Z-channel on the side of the drawers. Since they came from a casino, I would expect that the cash drawer was constantly being opened and closed. No matter how good the design, things wear out with lots of use.

Speaking of cleaning and lubricating roller bearings, we use a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF to flush out the bearings, then a few drops of 3-in-One oil. A light white lube can also be used effectively.

I would also like to note that LISTA does in fact offer a lifetime warranty which applies to only the original purchaser. So if you buy a used LISTA cabinet you will not be able to take advantage of their lifetime warranty.

Ok I have a question...I have bought a ton of lista cabs over the years...the new style I really like and the drawers seem to roll a lot easier then the old style that get bound up...going thru Lista's catalog/website I did not see a configuration that I wanted..so like my snappy dealer.. is it a custom order to change the drawer config when ordering, if sticking with same amount of drawers just different sizes on the stock price? With Snappy it is really stupid money to go changing out the drawer config on their tool boxes..almost the same price as the box just in extras (ie: a 10K box, with a drawer change is about 16K total). Is this the same with Lista? Also If your building a tall bench out two of the lista cabs and you drill the top of the cabs to thru bolt a top to them ( bolting under the cab to the top for a clean install of course ) is the warr. on them void at that point? Lastly...I moved one of ours at the shop the other day that was about 5' tall full of tooling and it seems to twist a little with the weight...I think it is holding about 2200lbs so that will be the last time we move it, but my question is if a machine goes down in the shop and we move the cab, it twist out of square is that covered? Ok that is it...just had some questions over the years that have built up. Also looking to swap a few out with red ones so will be getting with you on buying them.

You moved a 2200# cab fully loaded and twisted the frame? Did you tilt it and use a hand cart or did you walk it side to side to get to its new home?

Forklift......we had the bridgeport go down and on both sides of it are 5.5' tall lista's so we moved one to get the machine out. When we grabed the top to walk it out a little bit so the forks would not go thru the wall while picking it up, we started to move push on the sides and top and they move really easy, but the bottom did not move an inch, so it was really easy to twist the whole cab in place...we were moving it a total of 5-6" but after seeing that we slid it back with the forklift and then got it out. I am very carful with eveything in the shop..no sratches, dents, dings, dust, water, etc....unlike some shops..I pay for eveything myself and do not have some stupid tv show or huge wallet...so I do buy the best and trust me I keep it looking new...just ordered a new fab table today and it was 32K...10 years from now..it will ( I hope ) be the best looking used one on the market...thus all the questions before I get my order together for some red ones after going thru a lot of Lista's over the years.

Lista does not charge a premium to change drawer configurations or for any other customization within the available parts for a particular cabinet. We custom configure cabinets all the time. As a matter of fact we are big proponents of customers choosing what they want in a cabinet. The way Lista determines price is by the content; each piece has a price. So, let say you change a SC150F (5") drawer with 2 SC75F (2") drawers. I'll just use list price for this. The SC150F is $141.27, and a SC75F is $116.80; your net price change is $92.33. The formula also works the opposite.

Regarding the racking of your cabinet. Did you buy it new? If so, call me to discuss. I'll see what I can do the help out on a replacement.

Regarding bolting them together, there are punch outs on the top and holes in the bottom of the cabinet to facilitate bolting them together. This will not void a warranty. Lista is very good about taking care of their customers. Only obvious neglect or misuse will void a warranty, not holes used in normal installations.

Lista provided the cabinet at PJD and I highly doubt Jr. will give those up. We do get red ones occasionally in the Junkyard Specials.

Lista used the same suspension system for 40+ years. It was designed to hold 440 lbs. which in not only rare today but unheard of back then. The design change was for a lot of good reasons, including better long term reliability, easier manufacturing, and easier on customers.

Just like in any other industry, things go obsolete over time and spares, no matter how well you figure future needs, spares do run out. As I stated in the previous email Lista will replace an old style drawer and suspension assembly with a new one under warranty.

Just like in buying an old car, it's best to carefully inspect any old cabinet for condition, wear, and even rust.

Update on Lista Drawer Bearings

Frankush, et al

I was at the Lista factory this morning and was able to locate some drawer roller bearings. I was not able to locate any of the tray assemblies that are used under the OLD style drawers.

There are two different roller bearings used on the various drawer suspension assemblies. One is 0.865" in diameter, the other is 1.025 in diameter. They are both 0.335" wide with a total width with mounting rivet of 0.5". The 1.025 is what should be on your ST900 cabinet.

I have included pictures and can provide additional detail upon request. I have a very limited supply of these, so whoever may need them should PM me.

Picked this Lista up today for £160 GBP.

View media item 27652
It's a very well built box and looks to have had virtually no use.

Downsides are the drawers are very shallow, I have asked Lista UK about prices for replacement drawers etc but I may decide to just take out alternate drawers to gain extra space.

Willhollin,

That looks like it's in great shape but they are really small drawers for sure. It looks like an SC1350 with 18-2" (50 mm) capacity drawers. The price you paid is excellent.

Does it have a tray like carriage under the drawers? If so, it is Old Style and you will need the hybrid drawer assembly if you wish to swap out some drawers. Make sure you inform your distributor of that fact before you order replacement drawers. The drawers are not directly interchangeable between the Old and New suspension systems.

One other thing to be aware of is that your cabinet looks like it is painted a special color. Replacement drawers are only available in the standard colors unless you want to pay a premium paint charge.

Have fun with your great Lista find.

Thanks Joe,

Yes it is the old system, and judging by prices on replacement drawers it wouldn't be economical to replace them, so it will probably end up storing all my fittings, bolts etc.

One query I have is the fact that the drawers don't open fully which means a good 3" stays in the cabinet, is this normal?

The suspension may be the lighter duty 165 lb. version which at one time only opened up 85% of the way. I suspect that is what your cabinet is. The 440 lb. suspension was 100% extension which was the most common when I suspect your cabinet was made.

Some customers, based upon their storage needs, opt for the 165 lb. suspension which saves some money.

You have a nice cabinet that will still store a lot of your bits and pieces.

I find this troubling as well. I can understand that used cabinets aren't covered by the warranty. However, not supplying parts for boxes that are more than 5 years old does not sit well with me, especially for a design used for 40+ years.

I used to want Lista Cabinets bad...Then I found this thread...Non Servicable old ones makes them worth scrap metal and the new ones are plastic bearings/slides? Sorry, but plastic has no place in industrial slides...heck even Harbor Frieght boxes uses Ball Bearing slides.

Roachcoach and Spudland Dave

Thanks you for your comments. Let me try to address both of your concerns.

The OLD design with roller bearings was used for many, many years. It was by far, the best design of its time. As good as it was, it had its shortcomings; it did not last forever and required periodic maintenance. Drawers loaded with 100's of pounds of parts being opened and closed all day long caused bearing wear. Inadequate cleaning and lubricating of bearings also caused excessive wear. The roller bearings are attached to a tray using rivets. To service, the entire tray was the field replaceable unit.

About 5 years ago, the NEW design was released and contrary to the perception that the bearings are "just plastic", they are in fact a highly engineered Polyoxymethylene (POM) bearings that combines strength, hardness, dimensional stability, fatigue resistance, low friction, and low wear. POM bearings are truly state of the art when it comes to bearing technology. The HF drawer bearings are no where as rugged, quiet, strong, or as well engineered as the LISTA suspension system. No way, no how.

Technologies change over time and quite often for well founded reasons. From my perspective the NEW suspension system is far better than the OLD system. The drawers roll like butter and we have had virtually no issues at all in the past 5 years.

And finally, regarding the supply of spare parts. In many instances when roller bearings would wear out, the rest of the suspension would also be fatigued. We have seen the u-channels worn and the drawer side z-channels worn off from years and years of use. Roller bearings were never a field serviceable unit; LISTA would always replace the suspension system.

Unfortunately, like carburetors, old technologies and the spares for them run out of stock at some point. LISTA has a replacement strategy that includes replacing all of the drawer components, which in an old cabinet are likely either worn out or close to it.

I have a small stock of roller bearings for those who want to replace a few worn bearings. We will also provide very special pricing to those needing to upgrade their cabinet with new suspension.

One way or another, and with the help of LISTA, have found good working solutions to nearly every old support need we have encountered. If you have a particular need, let me know and we'll try to help out the best we can.

Regards,
Joe

First off, I can say a couple things, A) Thanks for exmplaining it to me, and B)Its apparent that you care about the product...which is good.
I didnt want to compare the HF Sliders to Lista..it was an extreme example to illustrate the point, but SnapOn and all the other big toolbox MFG's have stuck with Ball Bearings, here we are what, 30+ years later and those toolboxes are still in service and servicable. That may be a better comparison.

Technologies change over time and quite often for well founded reasons. From my perspective the NEW suspension system is far better than the OLD system. The drawers roll like butter and we have had virtually no issues at all in the past 5 years..

Call it fear of change or whatever but 5 years isnt a long enough time to say "this will last forever"...not when your shelling out premium dollars on a premium product...Plastic is Plastic...even though plastics have some a long way, I still wouldnt put my complete faith in them...I wouldnt want plastic buckles on a safety harness, no matter what the technical literatue says. Dont get me wrong, I love the plastic hood on my John Deere...but I just dont know how much I trust plastic slides on a "Super Duty" cabinet. I look at StorLoc and Vidmar...they still have the old fashioned bearings...

I really do thank you Joe for the post and clarification..I guess when it comes time to outfit the shop with cabinets, I'll give you a call for a quote at least...but I'm being bluntly honest and say I still have heebie jeebies about plastic slides. Maybe after 20 years of being in service I'll get fully onboard. Its not just Lista either, if SnapOn or MAC changed their sliders to plastic, I'd feel the same.

I believe Vidmar is doing the same thing with the POM or plastic wheels. I have one Vidmar box that I'm not totally sure how old it is but would guess maybe 6 years old and it has a carriage but half the rollers are Steel ball bearing and the others are plastic. Any idea when Vidmar stopped using the honeycomb logo? Mine has the newer logo without the beehive or honeycomb. I will try and take a picture tonight and post it.

Thanks for all of the great info Joe!

I tend to look for used cabinets and while most are ok they usually always need a good cleaning. I have seen some with excessive wear. I don't think I would buy one sight unseen off ebay.

I am Old School also and when the new suspension came out I was also very apprehensive but over time I have really become quite fond of the new suspension. I look at how the plastics industry has evolved into some great technologies, like carbon fiber and even POM bearings.

I don't really know what Stanley-Vidmar is doing with their suspension but I suppose I could ask next time I am at LISTA.

I can't speak to why other cabinet companies, like Snap On, choose what to use for suspension components on their mechanic product lines but I can only imagine that their engineering departments are doing their homework on all of the newer technologies, including POM bearings.

Five years is not a lot of time, but every time I open up one of my OLD design drawers in my shop I somehow wish they were the new suspension; they work that much better.

We'll see how this fancy new POM technology works out but if my mind serves me well, I remember similar discussions when fuel injection was replacing carburetors.

Again ... If anyone has a service or parts issue with an old LISTA cabinet, please let me know. Some stuff is just not available, but workable alternate solutions often are.

Regards,
Joe

Regarding an old cabinet, LISTA or any other brand, inspect it carefully for wear, rust, or abuse. Quite often a few dollars more on a better quality cabinet is well worth the investment. I am sometimes shocked at the high prices paid for some sad old iron.

Be Careful with that analogy Joe... :bounce: While the EFI in my '89 Camaro is cool and works great...the ol Holley in the 71 Chevelle is simple, bullet proof and very reliable. Cheap as heck to tune & tweak...I need a set of injectors in my 'maro, not half as cheap as workin on a carb.

On a more serious note...you put my mind somewhat at ease...I suppose it will boil down to dollars & cents between the brands now. You're only a skip & a hop away from me, so thats always a real big bonus to me.

Didn't mean to steal the thread but thought I would share some pictures of the carriage from my slightly newer Vidmar. I got this used but I would guess it is 6 or 7 years old but that's just a guess. Note how there are some plastic rollers and some metal ball bearing. On my older Vidmar with the honeycomb logo all of the parts are metal. It would be interesting to see what a brand new Vidmar carriage looks like. This summer I may clean these bearings as the grease is getting a little stiff. This newer cabinet does operate smoother then the all metal older one. I am also leery of long term durability of plastic though as these seem to be peened or riveted on as well. Haven't had any issues so far.

We'll see how this new POM technology works out but if my mind serves me well, I remember similar discussions when fuel injection was replacing carburetors. I think in this case, it is really for the good.

If anyone has a service or parts issue with an old LISTA cabinet, please let me know. Some old parts are not readily available, but workable solutions often are.

The old Vidmar pictures are great. The design is very similar to LISTA's OLD design. It's really great that you posted the pictures. I will take some detailed shots this weekend of the OLD LISTA suspension as well as the NEW suspension and post them also. It will be interesting to compare the designs.

Regarding the plastic on the Vidmar, which is also used in a similar way on the OLD LISTA suspension parts, it is definitely not POM which also means it does not have the attributes of POM bearings. But since they are used as a glide and not a weight bearing bearing they seem to hold up quite well on the LISTA implementation. I would expect the same with the Vidmar suspension.

And yes, it does look like your roller bearings need to be cleaned and lubed. They will roll a lot better. I use 50/50 Acetone and ATF to clean them and 3-in-One or white lithium to lube them. You don't want to use grease.

Maybe others can post detailed pictures of the suspension designs of their cabinets. It might be interesting to take a look into the various designs and the time frames in which the design was used. I am sure there are a lot of old cabinets, as well as new, in the GJ world.

Spudland,

My 67 GTO also has a very reliable carburetor and puts out a whopping 360 HP, all while delivering 6 MPG on a good day, way less with my foot in it. ON the other hand our F150 with EcoBoost V6 puts out 380 HP, all while delivering 16-22 MPG. There are two obvious conclusions: 1) The truck has much better technology, and 2) The GTO is still more fun to drive.

It is also not just dollars and cents, it's also all of the features and complimentary pieces that you can use to get an integrated solution. And then there is where the heart tugs, some guys drive Chevy's and other Ford's. Lucky for me, I drive both.

Regards,
Joe

Good tip. On my other Vidmar box I used Kroil which worked pretty good but I will try the 50/50 Acetone and ATF next time clean. I also lubed the last box with Super Lube® Synthetic Grease (21030) but may try just oil next time. My hope was that the synthetic won't harden. Guess time will tell.

Kroil is great stuff but I really like the 50/50 mix and it's real cheap to mix up a small bottle of juice. I have never tried the synthetic lubes. I would expect that they would maintain their viscosity better than fossil based lubes.

I just like the lighter lubricants. They seem to make the drawers roll easier but then again after cleaning out gummed up bearings anything would make them operate better.
