Once I visit the site, I'm on a timer of a few minutes and then all threads are marked read. It's really inconvenient for reading threads as I can't keep track of where I left off. Does this happen to everyone? I would participate more here but I can't keep track of anything. Is there a setting I've missed and need to change? Thanks for any insight.

It's a setting by the board administrator/owner. I've seen it on other forums running the same software; stay "inactive" for long enough (15-20min?), where "inactive" means "not loading any new pages" and it marks everything as read.

It is highly annoying but none of the admins ever change it.

It's annoying as heck, to me. I just know that somewhere out there, there's an answer to "Is Craftsman any good today?" that will resolve the argument forever. But I missed it because of the forum settings.

There have been a number of threads on this issue. It seems that the owners of this forum do not feel like upgrading the software, and your issue is due to a bug in the version installed.

For my own uses, I have found that Tapatalk's mark forums read button does work as intended.

I searched and did not find those other threads. Thanks for the replies. I know of one other forum with the same problem and when I asked the owner about it, he replied that he couldn't find a setting for that so buggy software sounds likely. The time period isn't very long for me, maybe 10 minutes tops. Must not bug most people, it's an active forum.
