Hello all,
This came with a lot recently won at an auction. Allenite Japan 1/2-drive, 10" long, made by the Daido Corporation, c. 1954-early 60s.
The markings are a match for a breaker bar shown at Alloy-Artifacts. I suspect this ratchet is the same era. There is no knurling and the face of the ratchet handle is unfiinished (but chromed). I believe it once had the rubber cushion grip similar to the breaker bar. The chrome also changes texture and sheen where the rubber grip would have been.
These are the pictures after cleaning. It works beautifully, there are 44 teeth (or so) lining the head and the internal mechanism shows little wear. As I was disassembling, taking care to avoid possible "sproing", it did indeed go Sproing! Yet that tiny spring and its hat hit my magnifying lamp and ricocheted directly into the yoghurt tub where I was placing parts! Lucky to say the least!
Even without the grip it's a pleasure to use.
Matthew
