another garage junkie here. we bought our house based on condition, price, and amount of land, but never took into consideration that there is NO garage. i never gave it much thought, as i have access to my father's shop a few minutes down the road. however, as this is currently undergoing renovation (as will be the topic of a future thread), i found it increasingly tempting to start planning a small shop on my own property. i have a relatively narrow but deep plot, so option 1 is a small attached (15 wide x 20 or 22 deep max, due to setback ordinances); enough room for oil changes and some trash cans, but featuring a deck on the roof to walk out from the master bedroom. option 2 is a detached 30x40 or so way in the back that would involve cutting a 100' driveway, running electric, plumbing, ect. there is no "both" option.

i have figured the following...

pros-

small: easy to tie in utilities, cheap to heat, gives us mud room and a deck
big: remote for noise reduction, MUCH more room, option for 2nd floor man-cave or kids game room.

cons-

small: it's small, can do minor projects only, would need to be custom built
big: will require landscaping and added cost for utility runs, cost savings from kit design limits floorplan options.

if i had to guess, i'd put cost about the same, because the small would be custom, but the larger one could be a kit.

looking for inspiration on the smaller option, as there are many 2 car threads.

also looking for input on my pros/cons list because i can't decide one way or the other.

thanks!

300 sq ft vs. 1200 sq ft

duh

I think most of us will strongly agree!

Goodluck to you. If you do go attached make it as deep as possible. 20' depth is going to be tight!

300 sqft my shed is bigger you need to go 1200sqft you will be happier in the long run. I agree 20' deep not much if any room to walk around never mind do anything.
