1927 Fisher 100 pound for $185.00.

Almost perfect condition. Sharp edges with a small undercut chip on one rear corner (See photos).

I've been working hard to clean up and repair my house for winter.

To calm myself, I was browsing Craigslist.

And I saw it....

A Fisher 100 pound anvil! For $185.00! In all but perfect condition!

Now, note that this anvil, in this size, in good condition, regularly goes for $500-$600 on Ebay.

The negatives....I already have a 100 pound anvil with a chunk out of the corner. It would be 100 miles round trip to get it. It would tie up the money until I could sell my other one. I really want a 200 pound one. The car dumps water and overheats on a trip that long. I should be using my time to clear and clean.

I was in the car, with all my cash, about to go, with Julie's blessing.

When I realized what I was doing.

Came back in.

Now she's mad at me for cancelling. I did call the guy and told him he under priced it by $200 or more. He has since upped the price by $100.

How do I feel?

Relieved.

It was a bridge too far. The wrong thing at the wrong time. An escape from reality.

Bill

You are claiming small victories against the hoarder psychosis and corrupting good deals for the next guy when they can't be had by you. Onward soldier.

Congrats for not buying the anvil, I fight with that type of thing all the time. Let the guy who needs to be to have it. Jacking up the price probably wasn't very cool tho, but whatever.

So true...

The way that the hoarder thinking goes is this:

I'll buy it and maybe someday I will sell the old one, or something, and get the money back. The reality is that they all just sit and get abused and unused.

Smart thinking is:

There will be another one, better suited to my needs, WHEN I have the place to use it and properly take care of it. And to fund that day, I will sell my other one, or some other items, BEFORE going shopping for the new one.

Same actions, but better timing.

Damn, I wish I could find a good, reasonably priced anvil around here.

Don't pay crazy eBay prices for them. $2 a pound with no flaws is a fair price for one. $4 a pound is good if it's something special and you really want it. Above that is just crazy!!! :shocking:

Protocol suggests, if unsuitable for your needs, financial or otherwise, that you re-post the ad here on GJ without any price changing taking place. :)

That's a good idea! I don't care if the guy was a nice guy or not, he priced it what he thought was fair so why mess with the price? Plus, we're nice guys too! :D

So, you were going to pay what he was asking, but since you had second thoughts you upped the price for the next guy?:headscrat

Yeah...that's screwed up! I would have bought it at $185...but not at $285+
I've been looking for an anvil that size for years...

Yeah what a guy he is, sneaks behind his wife's back. So why would he not screw every other person he has a chance to..

A real prince, feel badly for his wife... and very glad he does not work for me.

If you were so keen on telling the guy he was under pricing the anvil, why didn't you offer him more when you thought you wanted it?

There's always some sort of caveat, huh Bill?

Retaining integrity by calling and saying, "You know, it's just too far, I've got enough on my plate, etc., etc." keeps you in check.

Posting it up to your Michigan brethren so one of them can grab the deal adds good karma, for sure.

To me, this thread just sounds like, I needed a way to keep me from hoarding and eliminating a good deal helps that.

I upped the price for the seller. He was a nice guy, and it's still a bargain.

That's a ****** thing to do just because you restrained yourself from buying it. So anyone looking for an anvil like that just got screwed out of $100. :wtf:

Why is Julie mad at you for canceling? She should be supporting your fight against hoarding.

Also, stop reading Craigslist. You already have a dozen block grinders. Money goes in the bank.

I'm totally confused, why are you looking for things on Craigslist if your not looking for deals??
Just go pay full retail.

Consider a career at the budgeting office of the Pentagon. That's where $500 butter knives are born.
