Hi folks,
Just wanted to drop in and say I'm happy to link up with this site. First time home owner and in the process of designing my future garage/workshop. The plans are being drawn up for a 20'X40' cinder block (hollow tile as we Hawaiians call it) building with a 20' wide roll up door.
Looking forward to new ideas and advice from the experienced members here!
Aloha!
John

Welcome John,

Hopefully (being the Luck-E1) you don't have to deal with things like 12" of snow on April 4th - being in Hawaii!

Look (Google or search here) for CMU (Concrete Mansonry Unit) design to see what reinforcement should be used with a cinder block wall (and be included in you specs).

Good Luck!

It's been 5 years since I started on my shop and I'm happy to say that it's almost complete. Seems like projects like this are never "complete" as there's always something to add or modify. I managed to set aside a 12' section of the 20' X 40' building as our hurricane shelter. Happy to say that the Kauai County has a program that allows an owner of a certified storm shelter a tax break of $40,000.00 reduced from its assessed property value. The shop was completed in May of 2018, final inspection done, and officially inspection of the shelter done in September that year. This means I'll qualify for the tax break at the end of 2019. I'll post pics when I upload again. Did the Race Deck flooring in the garage/showroom side too. Stay tuned!

Wow, nice follow up!

Post up in the garage thread. You'll get a lot more views and comments there.

I'm in Waimea now. One of the few cool places in the islands right now. Kona was 93F today.

These were taken during the floor install and immediately after. Since then, I've installed my milling machine, metal lathe, and drill press along the wall just beyond the buggy. The hurricane shelter is cluttered at the moment, had a bunch of TIG welding to do in there. I don't weld or create sparks near the Race Deck flooring. Rather do all that outside anyway.
