I am in the process of building a 100' x 40' x 12' eave height building with a 2 on 12 roof pitch. It will be fully insulated with a white vapor barrier on both the ceiling and walls. The concrete will be painted in a very light gray. This building will be used as a personal machine shop.

I had read through many of the layouts that Platonic Solid had determined for others and it appeared as though a 2' linear high bay 80 watt fixture on a roughly 10' x 10' grid would be ideal for my application.

My issue is the fixtures I had planned on using are no longer available. It appears they have been replaced with a 150 watt version. I remember reading in one of the many threads not to use 110 watt lights at less than 14' high.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

A general rule of thumb is high bay lights should be installed at least 15 feet above the floor. That may not always be the case, but I wouldn't use them at 12 feet or lower.

For my building if I attach the fixtures to the underside of the building's purlins (max possible height) two rows will be at 11'- 6" and two rows will be at 12' - 10".

CD...Do you think the 90w fixtures would be appropriate for this height or something lower. Also, are all lenses the same or do some scatter the light more horizontally?

St in MN....I was wondering the same thing regarding the height. It just seems like everyone is using "high bay" and I didn't know what their limitations are. Is there a different type of light I should be considering?
