Alternative to hurricane ties

As I live in the Philippines we don't seem to have hurricane ties, what could be an alternative? Can an angle bar with holes suffice? We are tormented with powerful typhoons every year and I want to be better prepared specially with the likes of Haiyan.

BTW, I have wood furlings and trusses with G.I. sheets, I just want to strengthen my roof.

TIA

You can use simple metal straps, even crate banding material wrapped over the top and nailed to the wall studs.

The idea is to provide a continuous connection from roof to foundation.

Use metal straps to tie roof to walls and then walls to foundation.

Tying the individual components of the roof structure to each other will also help.

Make sure the metal straps have multiple holes for fastening, so they are well connected to the members.

The contractor putting up an addition to my house is using a long structural screw in lieu of the old style hurricane straps.

The screws were delivered directly from the truss manufacturer. The trucker handed me a package of screws with the bill of lading. I didn't know what they were for until I asked the framing carpenter a couple of days later.

Apparently they will drive the screws through the top plate and truss for the continuous tie in path.

Upon inquiring they told me they are only selling concrete ties. :-( The hunt still goes on. Tried to contact the other dealers but no response yet.

If you can't find them locally there are dozens of sellers selling huricane ties on eBay.

As I am reading them, those hurricane ties are just galvanized steel, is that correct? I am thinking perhaps I could also use slotted angle bars instead? Will it be able to resist uplift?

Even using metal banding used to strap packages together for shipping will be a great help. Trick is to get enough fasteners to make it secure. You will need to make sure you tie it to the foundation if you have one.
How do houses like your stand up in previous storms? Being too rigid may make your house sustain more damage. Storm shutters may be more important.

The most recent and actually the most powerful storm we've experience here is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_Storm_Fung-wong_(2014) and I'm glad our house survived the storm but typhoon Vongfong just missed us and I am not sure our house can take its strength as it is almost as strong as typhoon Haiyan.

I've got a concrete house but I've used wood as trusses and furlings, I just want to strengthen it using some straps or ties to be better prepared. I've got beams and the rebars are holding down the trusses, for sure I will put more straps to the trusses and tie it to the beams.
