Alternatives to Wagner Power Painter

So...one of the things I lost to thieves last winter was my Power Painter. Last time I was at Lowe's, I didn't see anything I recognized as being a direct replacement.

I don't need anything fancy...I might paint the boat shed and my tool shed about every four or five years. The tool shed is about 14' x 8' or thereabouts, but needs the entire exterior painted now and then. The boat shed is even less work.

What's (hopefully for fifty bucks or so, maybe a little more) recommended?

For once every four years my advice is to rent a professional sprayer vs buying Wagner "toy". You'll get a much better paint job.

What's wrong with the tried and true, brushing and rolling.

That's what I'm thinking! Get some Purdy brushes and get painting!

Spend your 50 bucks into quality paint from Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore instead of mediocre big box store paint...

I haven't rolled or brushed anything outside in years. I have some extra lengths of air hose I connected to my shop air compressor and run to an old spray gun and let er rip. Thin out the paint with some water and it sprays just fine. Did the deck, 4 garage doors, a man door and window shutters two years ago and they still look great

I was a painting contractor in the '70's when these things came out on the market. They never have worked very well and are more of a gimmick for people who think they are saving time and labor. I could see using one for shutters if nothing else was available as long as you brush out the coarse spray.

Spraying with air powered guns for architectural paints is really old fashioned but surprisingly it works if you have the right equipment, namely a pressure pot and the correct fluid nozzle, needle and cap for the material and viscosity you are using.

I agree on buying something better than the Wagner or just rolling it on with a fat roller and laying it off with a brush. No spray equipment works the paint into minor cracks, checking, etc.

At $50 your not going to be happy with the results of any painter. IIRC I paid around $150

Here is what I bought a year or 2 ago and I couldnt be happier with it. It uses a powerful fan to disperse the paint versus the junky pump sprayers. I painted my shed in about 10 minutes with it. Spent a much longer time cleaning the gun then I did painting. I hate painting with a passion especially when there are all kinds of textures and nooks and crannies to get in.

I bought the a reconditioned Wagner from these guys:

Worth the money. Painted my 24' x 40' in no time at all. Very nice and helpful when doing the 24' tall peak.

I dunno. I just used a Wagner the PO left when we bought the house to stain a good 200feet of fencing I put up a few weeks ago. Wasn't working at first. Turned out the PO hadn't been very thorough cleaning it last time he used it. Got it all cleaned out and unstuck. Used a siphon feed set up with a long vinyl hose straight into the 5 gallon bucket of stain and let her rip. Took me about two hours to do the entire fence and that was with a good half hour break for a bite to eat.

Overall it came out great and was way faster than it would have been with a roller or brush. Only real complaint I had with the thing was it vibrated a lot. Had to put some gloves on to dampen it a bit and keep my hands and arms from getting tired out too quickly.
