Did some more work on my chisel box this past week - the 1" and 1/4" chisel were both really short and I didn't like them. Found a nice vintage 1" chisel made by W K & C Peace in Sheffield, and a useable 1/4" made by "Oximex", who appear to be "Oxford Imports & Exports" out of Etobicoke, Ontario.

Put a new handle on the Peace, using some walnut that I rescued from the firewood pile - wood from a tree that my great-uncle planted!

The Oximex is nothing special, it was marked Canada but just with an etch, not a stamp. It seems to be OK steel.

On to my next project, which is to replace the steps on the front deck. There are two sets, side and front - the side ones I just used some pressure treated risers and 2x6 treads. For the front steps, which are wider, I took a trip out to a local mill and got some western red cedar, full 2x12 treads and 2x10s to make risers.

Here I've just finished planing down one of the 2x10 risers. Two more of these, then the treads get a similar treatment!

I picked up a bunch more sockets and wrenches a while back, photos are from the ad. It was a mix of the Husky set, Craftsman ST and EE (Asia), no-name cheap stuff and good vintage tools.

Came with a nice Beach hand carry box, so I did some sorting and gave away all the cheap stuff in an old red box I had. The Husky set is now almost complete, I even fixed the ratcheting DBE that had lost its ball bearing. It's just missing a few of the 1/4" bits. Going to replace the latches on the blowmold case, more as a challenge than as a useful activity. Not sure if I will keep it or pass it on.

Also grabbed a DeWalt 8-1/4" circular saw to go with my regular old sidewinder skilsaw.

Finished planing all the rough cedar for the front steps and have been carefully cutting stair risers.

I hope to finish the cutting this week and then will stain the wood to assemble over next weekend. We'll see. I hate scheduling myself and then blowing my own timeline.

Success! New front steps. It's nice to work with real wood, I was able to cut the risers around what few knots there were, and the treads came out nice too. They should last a lot longer than the ones we had before.

Picked up a Milwaukee 0231-1 Hole Shooter today, $10 from the Re-Store. It was dead- turned out to be a broken wire in the power cable. I shortened the cable by a few inches and it works now. Shown here with the DeWalt DW384 I got, which did good work on the 2" thick cedar.

Both tools are USA-made so I'm hoping they will last.
