Aluminum welding, critic mine

I don't get to do much aluminum but I enjoy trying. I cleaned this part, used a 3/32" tungsten, #10 cup and set it at 200A. I set the balance to 60% penetration and went to town. It looks ok to me but not as crisp as I'd like. You can tell mine from the factory weld.

Decrease arc length, increase filler and increase travel speed. What did the end of your tungsten look like? Your arc was too wide/heat too high from either longer than necessay arc or wandering.

BTW, capping aluminum welds can be tricky.

you need more amps to weld that chunk of alu,
or helium

you could try to clean it a lot better , preheat and set balance to minimum cleaning supported by your machine.

also, 3/32 can't handle 200A at 60% balance, that's why you had that tungsten explosion inclusion , you want the bigger one in lanthanated.

Tungsten was balled and I wasn't mashing the pedal either.

did you read what I wrote earlier?

it balls because it's past it's amp range, what tungsten is it ? lanthanated may handle high amps better than others but in the end it's the size that matters

I re-read it. I was using thoriated tungsten. The original weld cracked halfway around so I cleaned it out. The tubing is a thin wall, maybe 1/8" but the block is solid over an inch thick.
