Always use joist hangers?

Hey guys so I've got the hard part done with my ceiling lumber and to finish it up I need to get my stub joists sorted. I was going to use joist hangers everywhere but after thinking about it I'm not sure its necessary.

I know I just need 2x4's on 24" centers at each rafter here. should I use joist hangers or should I be fine with just nails?

No they are not needed for that application. You could add rafter ties if you wanted (Simpson H2.5) you would only use joist hangers if you were nailing those ceiling joists into the face of the header.

Around here we use joists hangers on everything even hurricane straps. When I put up my 3 car garage the framing inspector said I needed to have them and hit every hole in the simpson joinst hangers. I just had to chisel the bottom of joists lightly so sheet rock would sit flat on ceiling. Cheap item to add.

You have direct "bearing" on that header/wall. Strictly speaking, joist "hangars" provide the bearing point in a "****" situation with their saddle design and multiple nailing locations. Always use joist hanger nails (heavier ga. nails) and use every hole in the hanger. You situation would call for "hurricane" clips that works against up lift on the roof from high winds.

awesome. We don't really have snow here and the garage lasted 38 years with JUST badly cut 2x8 joists so its probably sturdier than its ever been right now.

Well with a 38 year old garage the OP is only bound to the code from 38 years ago. Adding a ceiling is not going to alter the original structure. H2.5 hurricane clips would give you a little stronger attachment point but that's about it since it is not part of the original structural roof component.
