I really, REALLY, want to find an affordable old KR-537 top chest to restore. ...and I want to add the UI from the HAL-9000 to it! :lol_hitti

I would actually want to get it powder-coated white with the aluminum bits anodized black, then put the HAL-9000 interface on it.

...am I crazy?

If anyone comes across a reasonably priced 537 chest, PM me and we might just find out.

...oh, and apologies to whomever owns the box above; I found the image on Google, but I know if *must* belong to someone here.

I just saw a great you tube video "ways to fell a tree"by campbellchisholm

In it the man showed a felling machine that he called Robby the Robot and he did a great voice over.

So no I don't think you are crazy!

Well, I'm glad to know I'm not losing it at least (...well, at least by fellow tool-fanatics standards, anyway). ;)

Bindernut, I'm in the greater (and I use that term loosely) Los Angeles area.

I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a decent 537 deal. :)

I like the KR537- It's my main box for tools now, and the Classic 78 has everything else (plus the 557 and the Kennedy and some storage lockers). The only thing I don't like about it is the hinged lid. Lifting it up and shutting it several times a day is a pain.

I bought the KR537, the bottom box 557, and the side 274 for $600.

Out of five box sets, that one was my second (minus the mid, which were out of production then). Had it for ten years with two sides before I totally packed it. I wore it right out...

I do love the boxes or I wouldn't even consider such an extravagant restoration, and I've spotted one (finally) on my local Craigslist. ...we'll see if the seller responds. :)

But honestly, as a designer, and a Sci-Fi geek, the first time I saw one of these boxes I immediately pictured the HAL-9000 interface on one; it would be great to finally be able to build it.

That is an awesome idea... and you would add power to the "interface"? could play with IR a bit and make it functional (for what I don't know)... get ahold of an old white bike helmet and put together a THX1138 outfit to go with it.

Seen a few boxes, non are "reasonable" though, found one that s/b thrown away for $1k no-neg.

I'm always on the hunt for a really nice set. I bought a new set back in the early 80's and loved them. Just ran out of room and traded bigger (550/555). If I could find a really nice set I would fill it with all my favorite Snap-On stuff

I don't know about the THX costume (maybe a cool for Haloween though), but I would definitely make the "eye" light up; it's just a red LED behind a wide angle camera lens. ...I can find a cheap, garbage fisheye lens easily enough; the box is the difficult find! :)

I have one of those sets. I really would like to upgrade to a bigger box but cant seem to get myself to part with it
on the other hand, while you are making a good selection in a vintage toolbox, you are still crazy
