On my way to an auction I spotted this! For whatever reason, there is a part of me that wants to buy it so bad I can't hardly see straight! Does this make me crazy? Or are there others that would buy this/think it's awesome?! How much would you/should I offer? And yes, that's a hatchback sitting next to it! It will be the best yard ornament ever!

I've seen that done a couple of places local to me. Guy's have them in their front yards as decorations. I think it's pretty cool.

Better be sure it's securely anchored. It looks like it would be a magnet for kids to climb-upon, and could kill someone if it wasn't secured properly. In that pic, it appears to be fastened to a small concrete pad next-to asphalt. I wouldn't consider that 'adequate.' No idea of how deep that concrete is but from what's showing, better get more liability insurance.

It's not as dangerous as it looks. I'm 99% sure that it's a wooden foundry block, and not an iron gear. I've got a ton of them in all shapes and sizes. They were used as pattern forms to make molds for iron casting. it probably weighs less than 30 lbs.

I love it but like most others here, I have space constraints for the near future. Once I get around to finishing a barn, stuff like this will follow me home all day long.

The time to buy is when you see it. Those pickers on cable are right about that.

A bit
Over processed and contrived for my tastes.

Natural finish, partially buried at an angle matching the sinking titanic, and used as a boot scrape and I'd like it.

On a rotisserie motor and being used to turn one of those little decorative wind vane wood chopper guys, yes.

As a static display of no note to myself or region, nope.

It IS intriguing. I don't know quite why either. It is something about the geometry, something about the power inherent in it, the potential for movement. It represents the industrial age.

I would take one and do something with it. Ideas are percolating right now. What would YOU do with one?

How much did they want?

A couple of you say you have, or have access to, plenty of them.
If you can come up with 1100sqft or so of them, pm me.

I don't like that some teeth are in the dirt. It should be right up off the ground.

I might mount it horizontally and mount a vise, grinder etc etc at every spoke. Have a small gear to turn it to bring the tool you want to the front.

OR - humm… the gears are turning.

It's an interesting piece but not anything that I would have any desire to own......even if it was free.

Get a matching pair and mount them at the end of the driveway on each side as an entry.

Holy ****! Mount it at the end of an electric sliding gate and let it turn and be pushed across the driveway when the gate opens and closes!
JAKE! IT'S ALL COMING TOGETHER!!!

So it is not a foundry pattern piece? Cool. I'd have to finish it in some other color than pink tho.

Make a bracket for one of your rear wheels on the family tank. It spins with the tire. You'll get lots of double takes.

I think you're 99% wrong. Looks like a real gear to me with a finished bore & keyway.

That would make a heck of a patio table with a smaller gear for a base and a round piece of glass for the top!

I've actually made wooden patterns for casting aluminum gears. I am thinking if it were a wooden pattern the keyway would not be there.

Looks like it's missing a tooth or two on the far side. A foundry pattern wouldn't have this.
No interest from me either. I guess when you work in a stamping plant where you see these things everyday it has less interest. Even painted up pretty like this one.

You just keep coming up with the coolest things.

Most of the stuff I find is either by accident or a result of just walking up to people and asking! Once I accepted that 9 out of ten times I was going to be told "no" it is amazing how many times I am told "yes". Far more often than not, now. Having cash in hand, and plenty to trade, definitely helps though.
