1/8"-27 NPS (not NPT) "straight pipe" hex die.

I prefer hex because I have a hex handle.

Probably. In fifty years, I've never seen one. The round dies do exist and the die stocks are inexpensive.

In fact, I've got at least four diameters of round die stocks and don't believe I've ever owned a hex stock. I'd always assumed the hex was so they could be turned with a wrench.

nye and reed made square dies. ebay search yields nada.
i do have 1/2 thru 1 npt square dies in nye, fwiw. no handle. they have been lifesavers when encountering near zero clearance

I just checked MSC's website and they only show round dies and are forty bucks each.

Hex dies are normally not used for cutting new threads, normally round dies are used for cutting new threads.

1/8-27 NPS was/is commonly used on lamp fittings. Most hardware stores stock threaded lamp tubing in various lengths.

Die stocks are often inexpensive, so the choice of die should not depend on the die stock you already own.
