You're not the only one. She goes to lumber rack and sales rep picks something, trying to be helpful..
easier to get another piece of wood?

You send your wife to buy wood for a project???

^^This^^

Many years ago I sent her to get a long funnel and said, 'do NOT get a 2 piece funnel"
You know what she brought back and the second piece is still in the 71 Chevy gas tank

Mine isn't always on the same wavelength as me when it comes to getting what you pay for. But it doesn't carry over to wood projects. Those are me and / or her Dad.

No, she likes to "surprise" me with some wood and a project... one of the downfalls of having a "crafty" old lady that works at home depot..

I always thought wife supposed to have the rack,
. . . .and husband to have the wood ?? :D . .

Apparently you are not in fact "the only one", that surprises me... :headscrat

Of my wife's many talents and skills, picking lumber is not one of them. :spit:

The thought has never crossed my mind to send the wife for lumber, if I try that trick some day and I am not not happy with her selection, I would have to ask myself; WTF were you thinking? :wtf:

Hopefully you are just venting here and not at your wife...

Hopefully you don't have to learn this lesson twice! :)

ALWAYS send the wife with a pic, stock number, UPC, or old part of whatever you need. I even pre-order from Autozone, when needed, and just have the stuff waiting for my wife to pay and pick up. This has eliminated a lot of frustration for both of us and has saved me a lot of time too.

Next time she brings crappy wood home for a project take it back to HD and exchange it. Of course go to one where she doesn't work.

I send mine with truck and trailer, and she brings back cleaner and straighter boards than I come home with. That and she has a better handle on "value" than I do. We go to a construction materials auction monthly, I let her do all the bidding/math. She also picks through the lots, inspecting quality and quantity.

This morning, I was talking about 50 - 14' sheets of white corrugated steel, priced at $1.50 a foot that where in the "bargain corral" at Menards yesterday, I made a comment about how fast that adds up $, her rebuttal was the square foot that you where covering and its really not a bad price.

To which I replied "Huh" ? Im cheap, she can do math !

And the moral to the OP is...........................???
35 years of marriage and I still cant work it out.
Yet surprisingly my significant other does very well sometimes, I had casually mentioned that our Honda City ( grocery getter ) was due for its 40k service, I get home from work later in the week and here is genuine Honda Oil, coolant, air and oil filters, sump plug washer, etc sitting on the kitchen table - big tick
However at the other end of the spectrum if I specifically ask her to purchase an item she has a tendency to purchase commercial quantities of stuff that we do not need.:dunno:

the old lady is pretty good about picking out (proper) material for DIY/renovation projects.

at times we had to go "cheap" on materials on a few projects, but i do get the "leftovers" to reuse in the garage or basement workshop.

I am working on mine,, getting her to estimate. I also send her when she is in the vicinity to shop parts if I can save a 20 for a short one stop shop. She is the same age as a lot of people that work in them, I know a few guys it seems that do duty there and I send her,,, get the cheapest one they got. I can make a 10 on a set of brake pads in 5 minutes and not have to leave my chair. Have her drop it at the shop desk.

Oh I got you beat BAD.

My Beautiful/**** Misses just flat out, more than just about anything else on Earth, loves to get me going on a project that RULES over any & every thing else in my life. THEN when I can see the end....get me going on ANOTHER project.

FINALLY I just told her "IT'S YOU!!!!" "YOUR THE ONE THAT CAN'T STAND ME FINISHING ANYTHING!!!!!".

My garage is a complete disaster! COMPLETE disaster! I have buckets and buckets of tools for different projects stacked everywhere....one pair of "nail-bags" sitting next to all the screws/paint/paint-brushes/boxes of nails...etc.etc.etc.etc.etc.....off a bit from that---yard sprinkler stuff in a neat little "group" on the floor....all rain-bird stuff, with a few other stuff that I jerked out of the ground for replacement...shovels, black pipe etc. etc.....behind that cement finishing tools, wheel-barrow, electrical boxes, rolls of #12 wire (green/black/white), dimensional lumber of all sizes 2X12's, X10's, X8's, down to X4's all over the garage, some new, some old....waiting cutting into some size or other....

Shelf project??? You got it easy....don't wine to me.

:lol_hitti:shocking::lol_hitti

But I ain't complaining.....hehehehe

My sweetheart came home the other day with a grinder, thinking I was wanting one.
It's a good old grinder on a HD base. And a box of grinding wheels. It's a belt drive. She got it for $35 and it runs good. No name.

But I already have 5 or 6 Craftsman block grinders, and a couple of other brands including a Baldor!

What I have been looking for is a disc sander...

Oh well, her heart was in the right place!

About 11 years ago, MrsB decided to put up a stuffed animal shelf in daughter's bedroom one day. You guessed it. Rough-sawn 2x10. Painted. It's still there.

Just for a future FYI...Get some birch plywood next time for making shelving and dividers. Add a nice 1/4' thick clear pine nosing to trim out the front..then stain/paint.

My wife picks up supplies for me only in special cases and even then, ONLY if I can give her a pic on her phone she can show someone at the store.

Anything that requires a judgement call, forget it.

I'd suggest that you get her involved in the project. Let her see what it takes to build something, how it's done and what extra time her junk wood takes up. Hopefully she can learn what it takes to pick out good lumber.

I don't usually send the Mrs. to the DIY store for some specific item, but when I have, it's usually been correct. It the grocery store stuff that she gets screwed up on. I will specifically ask for a name brand something-or-other, and I'll get something that's close, but not quite right. She tends to miss-read labels. I just go, "Thanks, sweetie.". This is probably one of her biggest faults, so I really don't have anything to complain about.

To the OP - teach her a little about lumber. She'll do better next time.
