Need hammer?
This is not coming from an Amazon warehouse, it is a 3rd party seller.

A few months ago, there was a thread about the demise of Vaughn in the tools section. Marshalltown is the new owner of Vaughn. So yes it’s a 3rd party as in not Amazon but in reality, it is the “factory” selling them.

My 14hp came. It's in good shape except the throttle plastic cover is snapped. Very lousy shipping. Box was wide open
Northern tools have the worse shipping and packaging for some reason, I had their 6 ton jack stand and they have managed to lost the paw on both jack stand 2x despite the lip services that they will put heavy duty tape etc etc over the phone. That was my last order with them, I just let that membership expires and note to self never order from them.

Kicked them to the curb 20 years ago because of poor shipping packaging. Shipping was also pricey along with "just OK prices"……. Many more options out there nowadays for deals.

Out of the 3 I got, one has the carb bolts and air filter housing destroyed, one has a cracked air filter housing that is fixable, and one looks perfect. Still can't complain for 200 bux each, I bet someone at Northern got pinched over this.

So, what's the resolution? Will they send you new parts to DIY fix, or do you have to roll the dice on shipping engines back and forth under a return policy?

The shipping department must be a "Fork Lift Rodeo" arena.
I don’t care if these engines were $50 each because there is no excuse for this type of shipping damage nowadays with modern packing materials.

BTW! "EFF" Northern and their shipping department…….. This is why I won’t deal with them..

I figured it was a test run of a new shipping process. All they needed was a really thin piece of import grade plywood and mine would have probably been ok. I spent my entire career trying to ekk out incremental cost reductions in commercial processes. Sometimes you cut too far.

They were probably packed for pallet shipment in bulk.
The boxes were not designed for individual shipment by residential delivery companies.

That makes sense. Unfortunately, no one told the guy shipping from Northern, LOL...

All you guys that bought engines with no plan, but they were a “good deal”: I did the same thing with the HF Predator engine when HF was blowing them out for, I think, $69.

It’s still sitting in the factory sealed box on th shelf in the garage, a good ten years later.

Meanwhile the 8hp flathead on the log splitter still starts on the second pull. I have to add oil with each refuelling, but that’s less hassle than an engine swap.

I have a 1997 (27 years old!!!???) 8-HP Briggs that really needs to be retired, but I keep babying it along. Parts for that engine are not only WAY overpriced now, they're also becoming discontinued at an alarming rate.

I'm thinking about taking my chances one of these newer Kohlers, at least they're not HF "specials" with no real parts network.

BTW, I also have a smaller Greyhound (HF, pre-Predator) one, out of the box, but never used. Too small for this application.

I also have a HF Predator on a log splitter, which has been nothing short of amazing.
