As a self admitting tool junkie i have many items in my amazon cart that i buy every month a hundred or so dollars at a time. The two days ago everything went up a crazy amount. 45 dollar ratchet is now 65 and it is like this for a large amount of everything they sell. This is in Canada but i checked and its the same on Amazon.com. Does anyone know the cause of this?

Amazon's prices fluctuate a ton. Just give it a few days and they should dip back down and then you can buy them.

I've had stuff fluctuate $200+ at a time.

I bought some socket trays on Sunday from Amazon.ca and went to buy more today and the price was higher.

I bought a bahco 3/8's ratchet from amazon.ca for 30 shipped, and the next day it's sitting at 89 bucks and has never come down.

OK, it came down a little...

Get the ASIN from the item page, and enter it into camelcamelcamel.com, and that'll tell u how the current price compares to past prices, lowest price, and average price. You can also set alerts for items you are interested in, and a price threshold, and u can get alert emails when the item hits your price threshold.

Oops Niniek beat me to it.

Oh and the reason for the $ increases? Bezos is building rockets and needs to go to mars, and needs more $.

I have used amazon for over a year now and i know that stuff fluctuates. But from my research and some quick searches id say 60% of the hand tools have all increased 30% or more. I think it was just time to raise their prices or something.

One a similar note, I've seen Tekton (permanent) price increases on some of their products. For example, the 4 piece lug nut socket set went from around $16 to now $22. There's also a Teton 3/8 in. Metric Deep and Std Socket set with Rachet that went from about $22 to $35. Also the GearWrench micro ratchet set went from $15 to $20.

I noticed this too. This wasn't just a price fluctuation, pretty much everything went up dramatically. I bought complete sets of GW 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 sockets for $330 last week. This week same sets would cost over $700

Prices go up and down... sometimes, just up as prices are readjusted. Check with other retailers and see if they are still competitive.

Amazon has also increased the minimum purchase for free super saver shipping from $35 to $49. Way back when it was $25.

Pushing people into Prime.... I've decided to try it for a year, blown $100 on stupid stuff before ;)

I order a decent amount on amazon, free 2-day shipping, no minimum order and the price on certain items is less.

Prices are going to fluctuate at Amazon; just have to be patient if you are looking for deals.
That being said, ever since the USPS price hike (and other major shipping companies), prices have noticeably increased to compensate for the increased shipping fee at places such as Ebay. Back then, Amazon had the free super saver shipping at orders over $25 for a long time before they increased it to $35, despite the increasing shipping fees. It *****, but you can't fault them there. Buy a lot from Amazon? Prime is pretty convenient.

Amazon has gotten expensive on almost everything, to the point I'm rarely buying there anymore. It's a one stop shop, yes. But best price, rarely.

I can't verify this, but I swear that if I leave some items in my cart for a while (maybe a week), the price goes up. If I change my mind and delete them, the price goes back to normal a day or so later....

Agreed. I often go there to see reviews (and take them with a grain of salt) to start my comparison shopping then look on ebay for typically cheaper prices and factor that in against dealing with potential risk. As mentioned above in the thread, I use Google search then click on the shopping tab to compare etailers.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that Amazon just entered into a contract to lease 20 Boeing 737's? I saw it earlier today and they mentioned how much their freight expenses have gone up so there were going to take an attempt at controlling some of those costs.

Just might have something to do with it, maybe not.

Truth... it happens, they monitor what you search and look at and what you keep in your cart.

I put things on my Watch List, and they often drop the price later. I think Amazon tracks these and if too many watch and not buy, they lower the price. It doesn't hurt to put something on your Watch List, and probably helps.

The Tekton $15.00 off $50.00 sale just before the first of the year, was a really good deal...

With free shipping above $35.00(at the time), and no taxes...

Yea...

Prices fluctuate...such is life...

Glad I bought all my Gearwrench sockets when I did. My 1/2" drive sae master set went up $60, 1/2" metric master set went up $50, and 1/4" master set went up $25. Crazy

I have a few things left on my wish list from a basement bathroom project. I just checked the list and 3 of 4 items say that the price has decreased by 11% since added to the list.

The garage door rollers I bought 2 weeks ago have decreased from $12 to $3.73. I guess price changes can go both ways.

Amazon has long played with prices. Like the airlines, the ultimate goal of most companies is to extract the maximum possible revenue from each customer for each item they purchase. All the data Amazon collects helps them do that.

Just remember: Amazon is NOT your friend but then, neither is any large business (and most small ones too).

I try to spread my business around because if you let Amazon (or Wal Mart, etc...) kill off the competition then you're totally ripe for the plucking!

You just need to be a smart shopper and not a impulse buyer. I watch all my purchases and search at others so I know whats reasonable. Bought a item in November last year at $48 and now it's $71.

I bought a lot of battery terminals when it was "add-on" at $2.20.
Now the same item is not an add-on, and priced at $6.50.

I suspect most of the price increase is to pay for the "free" shipping. When it is an add-on item the other items in the order basically pay for the shipping.

I often see small items priced pretty high at Amazon, but no higher than others when you add the shipping on.

I see what you mean. I just logged into my Amazon account to see the prices of stuff I've left in my cart or I have saved in my cart. Usually it will "Important messages for your cart" and show the prices have fluctuated up or down a few bucks. Not the case this time. I have 9 items in my cart / saved and all of them have gone up significantly. A few examples,

Swivel socket set (there has been only one set in stock by amazon for the past year and sold by amazon and I have had it in my saved cart for over a year) the price has normally hovered around 150 - now its at 244.

ATD Saber light - was 115 - now 152.

Even the used items have gone up in price. A used ratchet I was debating on went up 10 bucks. A used set of pliers was 21 now 28.
