For anyone who buys frequently on Amazon they might have noticed that prices seem to fluctuate almost daily on some items. Pretty annoying really when you're trying to get the best price and the day you decide to buy it now costs $10 more than it did the other day. While reading up about why amazon does this dynamic pricing, I came across the following site where you can just search up any product on amazon and get it's price history to at least know if in the grand scheme of things you're buying at the high side or low side of it's current price.

If you use Google's Chrome, there is an add-on that puts a little Camel into your address bar when you are on Amazon's site that lets you see the price history in a little graph. This way you don't need to search all the time. They may have it for other browsers - who knows.

They also have price alerts - you can sign up for an email when the price on an item gets below a certain amount.

For you tech gurus - they have the same thing for newegg.com called camelegg.com. The browser add-in works on both amazon and newegg.

I've noticed that if I click on something on Amazon and then don't buy it, in the next few days I get an E-Mail...suddenly there's a sale on left-handed metric adjustables!

Until you notice that the "sale" is just their normal price. "45% off xxxxxx...." Except it was always "45% off".

I'd love to know the logic behind the penny-at-a-time price fluctuations, seems to me it would be worth waiting until they had something more appreciable before bothering. Not that it costs them much, if anything, but it's gotta make some people uneasy. I've seen some insane ones... I bought one of those coiled 7 way to 5 flat trailer cables "used, like new" for about $7, mentioned it to my dad a day or so later in case he wanted one, went back and looked and the same used ones were close to $30.

When I buy a lot of something on Amazon I notice the price jumps when checking it the next couple days. Example I bought 8 casters and they went up in price a couple bucks a piece afterward.

Although the user interface is not complex -- www.pricegoon.com is an alternative. It seems to be more geared for manufacturers to track sellers and prices.... it is interesting to see the rating and reviews graphs, along with prices. I asked them to give my hourly updates on the parts, and they did!

I used a site called Unimerc. They do the same thing but also have a nice selection of things that are on sale. Like for instance the have tools that Amazon has recently discounted.

Its a bit hit or miss but if you check back from time to time sometimes there are some pretty good deals. They also have all the other features that Camel does.

repricing on amazon has everything to do with different sellers wanting to win the buy box. do a web search for Amazon Repricer. There is a whole industry based on this now.

I get that when there's a bunch of sellers competing. I've seen Amazon do it themselves, even when there's no competition on an item. I've got a few hundred things saved in my cart (I should really clean that out one day... ) and it's not unusual for 10+ to pop up with price changes of +/- a couple cents, for no apparent reason.

And their textbook buyback program has wild mood swings. My one book that was still worth something had a buyback of like $12 the other week, so I listed it for sale instead. I checked back a week later, and it was offering $186... and I paid about $150, it's only $205 new. Now it's back down to about $50.

I have put things on my wish list and found them later to be priced lower and it tells me that this item is x% lower than when you put it on your wish list.

I kept some items in my cart once. $40 a caliper when I put them in there. Came back the next day and they were up to $120 each . I swear they raised the price on me on purpose....
