They did this last year too.
Until Sunday, January 17th at 11:59 p.m., PT, new members can join Amazon Prime for $73 for the first year and enjoy member-only benefits and content, including our Golden Globe Award-winning series, Mozart in the Jungle. Although the price in your cart will show $99, the promotion discount will be applied at checkout. You will be charged when you place your order.

And if you're an existing member, send them an email asking why they value new customers over their loyal current members and they will credit you the difference. One more reason I am an Amazon Prime member, GREAT customer service but they really should offer it to all.

IF you are getting it to use the video/TV stuff......

ask someone first, as the interface is AWFUL....you can "remove" from your queue all you want while on the box app, but the show will remain until you actually go to Amazon and remove it, similarly, each "season" is an icon and Prime does not remember where you are in a viewing session...

ie the interface is AWFUL

kindle fire "free books" is almost as challenging to use, but then you can use a local library MUCH easier.

I am "sitting on the fence" about a prime membership...... How do you guys like it?
BTW! Not too nice that they offer a low price to new members but won't do the deal for existing members....... I guess they are like a drug dealer, "The first one is free after that it will cost you"

prime is pretty nice...decent shows on the service, decent free songs to add to playlists with ones you've bought, the free two day shipping, and VERY low priced one day shipping...it's pretty damned decent...that said, i'm about to send an email...i was auto renewed at the beginning of the year, and got charged full price

Thanks for the heads up. Sent them an email and they're crediting me $26.26 for my Prime membership.

I think Prime is pretty great. A benefit I use often if I don't need the item right away you can select a slower shipping option and they'll give you a $1 credit towards buying music or movie renting. Pretty sweet deal, I think I'm up to around $18 in credit. I'll often split up orders just to get more credits, another trick is order one thing 2 day prime and another order for the credit and they'll often group them together and you'll both items in two days.

Haven't experienced that in either android, pc/browser or xbox 360 app. In fact it remembers if I paused it in the middle of an episode in the middle of the season.

80% of our viewing prime content is on the 360. Only complaint is the 360 fan is loud.

I'm a cheap skate - $73 is still $73.

Amazon seems to have free shipping on a lot of items - particularly if it's over $35.

And I don't absolutely have to have my orders in 48 hours.

I use the music and shipping sides of it. The shipping is really handy for me around Christmas because im pretty last minute. I really don't see the value in the streaming section to be honest but I also have Netflix so im not desperate for a second service that offers 80% garbage 10% old movies that have been on cable a thousand times and 10% decent media.

Its not quite $73. There are monetary perks for prime members, for example if you're in no rush for your items you select "no rush shipping" and they give you a dollar per shipment toward their online video and music. I've managed to bank about $20 since September and with that I can buy digital music, or rent/buy digital movies.

I was one of those people saying that I don't need prime, just schedule when I need stuff, no problem.

Well someone bought Prime for us as a present and there is no turning back now. The same principle applies, where if I am not in a rush then I get $1 credit for digital buy (though they expire). If I want it quickly, I get it in two days.

Also the $1 credit is per order/shipment. So if I need 3 things and have time for them, I place different orders for $3 credit.

I now buy all my engine oil on Amazon... same price as WalMart (cheapest around me) but delivered to my door.

Yeah, Amazon has some good pricing on motor oil for Prime customers. The only problem is that they are out of stock sometimes on certain weights.

Apparently there was an offer for existing customers as part of this deal... I never see the "existing customer" deal advertised, only the "new" customer deals... Anyone else?

Deal got done on Sunday though so I am SOL.

Amazon Prime- worth it's weight in gold.

If you aren't a member you're seriously missing out.

I don't use their music/media at all but my membership has more than paid for itself with free shipping.

I'm a cheapskate, I don't look at it as free shipping, I look at it as $73 for shipping.

Plus, everything I buy is over the $35 threshold anyway for free shipping, if not, I add a few fillers I need. I also do subscribe-and-save for stuff like deodorant, razors, garbage bags, etc., free shipping for that.

I think I'd be a player at $49 per year, but more than that and I'm out. And by $49 I mean that's the regular price each and every year, not a promotion price.

It would have to be around $20 for me. I think I use Amazon about 10-12 times a year and I usually get free shipping. I don't need their entertainment since I have Netflix and Youtube.

If I ever give up totally on brick and mortar, I might rethink that decision.

i missed this promo this time.
We use Amazon a LOT; however, you do need to price shop. sometimes, the free 2-day prime shipping is not really that good of a deal. sometimes, it IS good. you just have to know your prices.

I buy a lot less at Amazon since they started charging sales tax to MA customers. When you figure in the tax, there's a lot of places selling the same items cheaper. Not into the movie thing, so no prime for me.

I look at it as $73 for not having to wait until I have enough stuff to get an order over the threshold. I need something, like soldering flux, I order it, It's here a day or two later. I think of something else, it's on the way too.

Before Prime, I had to get up orders big enough. I'd often forget something until after I click the last button, then curse about leaving that one thing off. Then I had to wait until the next order...not any more.

Oh, and I get to watch Transparent and The Man In The High Castle for free, as a bonus.
