I just got an email confirming that when my prime renews is July the rate is increasing from $79 to $99.
My rate increases in July 2014. So check your renewal dates!

I shop on amazon a lot so I feel like the discounted prices I get probably even out the membership fee. If I had to order more in order to get free shipping or wait around until I have several things to order together then I'll probably end up spending that much more anyway. It's just harder to part with it all at once.

I will probably still come out ahead but not sure. Its probably still worth it but it pisses me off.

As bad as it sounds to have the prices increased, it's not as bad as they had announced the increase would be when this first hit the news a month ago. They were going to charge $129! Be glad it's only $99, and that's *still* a bargain for me. It's worth it for the shipping alone.

I was expecting it to go up to $129, so $99 is tolerable. I do enjoy the Amazon Prime videos.

I hope they expand their free video selection (and throw in other perks).

I'm at the 70 orders in the past year mark, I think I got my money's worth.

I still have my college email account active so I only pay $39 a year :) Luckily it is only going up to $49 a year.

There's a workaround for next year. Deactivate your automatic renewal and buy a Prime membership as a gift and send it to yourself. You'll get one more year at $79.

Probably won't impact number of current members a whole lot. Most of them will probably stay members.

Will probably affect number of new members that sign up. $99 sounds like a whole lot more than $79. To me, $79 sounded reasonable. $99 not so much.

The free video is the only thing that makes it worthwhile.

Amazon has been increasing their prices, especially in the past year, to cover shipping costs. The diapers we use have gone up 30% per unit, between a smaller count and higher price. Pasta that used to be about $4 for a four pack is now $9.

This is especially grating with Subscribe & Save items. They ship items and charge the price they decide to charge that day, even if it has doubled since the last shipment or since the day before.

After they raised free shipping to the 35 dollar cap I've stopped using them completely. I'll buy from independent sellers though...usually through their own websites.

How to Get Amazon Prime for $79

Amazon Prime is increasing their service fee to $99/year. This is a way to continue your membership for $79/year at least for now.

1. Go to Amazon

2. Send the gift of Amazon Prime to yourself

3. When your prime membership is about to end, use the gift you sent to yourself

4. That's it! You just saved $20!

I personally think $129 was a number they threw out there to make $99 not seem so bad. Plan to keep mine going.

I dont get the articles premise.. if its inflated to cover shipping.. hows it still competitive with everywhere else? Seems cockeyed. Plus don't make conclusions on accusations.

For those that like price comparing.. price blink for google chrome will do it automatically when you shop and tell you where is cheapee but amazon rarelt gets beat..

So do you guys use a Roku for video? My house is wired so I have been looking at the Roku 3. It is the only current model with an ethernet port on it.

That is disappointing. If they expand the video section to the point it encompasses everything netflix offers, and I can offset the cost by dropping netflix, I'll consider it a win. Anything less than that, and I will have to think hard about renewing. This buy a gift subscription trick to lock in the pric3 one more year will work for me though. I think I'm going to consider it a problem I don't have to be concerned about for 15 months...

I get the point with that, but technically anyone that offers "free shipping" is doing that. That shipping always has to be paid for, and any item you buy, anywhere, for free shipping, has had the shipping cost built into the price of the item. There is no free lunch.

What pisses me off it when you buy one of these free shipping deals (looking at you, *SEARS*), like "Shop Your Way Max" and pay an annual fee for free shipping, then every other day they run some sort of promotion where they give "free" shipping to any order over X dollars. I had SYWM for one year, and better than 3/4 of the things I ordered that year could have had free shipping through one promo or another.

If they're going to offer an annual fee based "free" shipping option, they should be consistent about charging shipping to those that don't buy that option.

You're kidding, right?

You just shouldn't have bought a SYWM membership, it didn't make sense for you.

At $99 I still think of it as a great deal. That's comes up to $8.25 a month, compared to the $6.58 a month that would equal to the $79 rate.

Amazon has movies and shows like netflix, which is $7.99 a month or $96 a year. Granted it doesn't have as big of a selection as netflix but there is still a nice selection. Netflix only has video content, I can't buy tools and get them shipped for free on Netflix.

Im pretty sure with as much as I buy on Amazon every month, if I did'nt have prime, I would be paying more than $8.25 a month for shipping, especially if I wanted 2 day, or even take into account that Amazon raised the threshold for free shipping from $25 to $35.

Not to mention that it all breaks down to a $1.67 increase a month. As hard as that is to swallow, keep in mind that this is the first time Amazon raised their prime prices since it started in 2005. Just think about how much we were paying for for gas a few years ago or how much the price of a cheeseburger was a few years ago, $1.67 increase isn't much.

I'm keeping mine as I buy a lot of stuff from them. I also just discovered amazonsupply.com and have been buying dom tubing with free shipping. I got a 5' piece for $11 shipped. The movies not so much.

I wish they would separate video from that. I'm guessing that's a large part of the "prime" cost. I don't have fast enough internet where I live to support video streaming yet i'm still paying for it in part of this package deal.

Just my thoughts, personally with the price increase I cancelled my renewal.

WOW!! didnt know about this site but it is certainly worth my renewal now. i have a couple welding projects coming up and these are way better thn my local prices.

On another note, if anyone knows anyone that is a student, amazon student is a way better deal. They are also increasing from 39 to 49 but thats half the price. Since i am the only student in my family, i activated it on one account that is just shared between everyone. Then my brother and I just split the cost.

The only thing I use Amazon for is buying stuff, a couple times when I had Prime I set up the streaming stuff just to get it set up. But I don't think I every watched anything more than a couple minutes to verify it worked.

What I usually do is just have $35 bucks worth of "filler" stuff in my cart at all times (coffee filters, toilet paper, cereal, paper towels, soap, laundry detergent, shaving cream, etc.) Stuff that I'm going to need anyways, regardless.

Then if there is something I want under $35, I add it to the cart, and simply drop in one or more of my "filler" items to bring up over the free shipping threshold.

Find one of your friends that has a full account and have them add you to theirs if you are not going to get video.

Yep, got a Roku 3 recently from Woot. It's awesome. Assuming you use streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Instant Video, it is well worth the price. While the content included in Prime isn't nearly as good as Netflix, there is still plenty to watch, and I don't mind paying for rentals occasionally either, it still beats having to go to a Redbox or similar. I run ours on a wireless network and have had no issues, so a hard wired connection isn't necessary but it sounds like you're already set up for it.

Decided I'm not going to renew mine. I don't use the video service, and they have started charging sales tax, cutting into the savings. I can see why they have to increase costs, they can be morons when it comes to shipping. Placed an order, and added 10 1/4" tubing ferrules, at something like .14 ea. Said they were out of stock and wouldn't ship for a month, but I didn't care as they were just for stock. Couple weeks later, they sent 1, next day air. About a week later, they sent 4 more, 2nd day air. 3 or 4 days later they sent 5 more, also 2nd day air. What was the net loss on that transaction? Should have just thrown them in an envelope and mailed them first class. I'm also kind of surprised they don't sell these in packs of 10, seems crazy for them to even bother selling them 1 piece at a time.

The price increase wasn't what made me cancel my Prime. It was their debacle with the PS4 release, their failure to meet their guarantee and then basically telling you they owe you nothing for missing their guarantee. What value does their guarantee have then?

Sounds like a typical business move. Get millions to signup for something then jack up the price in the future in hopes of people being to lazy to cancel:D

It's not worth it to me I only order from them once every couple of months. Rockauto gets my business for auto parts anything I can't get with them I go to amazon.

I did the opposite. Used to buy everything at Rockauto, now I get more parts from Amazon.

Like I picked up an Aisin timing belt kit for $150 on Amazon, $180 on Rockauto. Spectra radiator, $60 on Amazon, $130 on Rockauto.

Amazon also discounts heavily sometimes on stuff that hasn't moved in a while, so just leave stuff in your cart and check it every few days. I usually check the pricing history on 3Camels to know what to expect the discount should be. They also have open box stuff pretty often, which is 30-50% off usually.

What other services this good have remained at the same price since 2005 or whenever the $79 price appeared?

It's $8.25 per month. That's nothing. I am OCD when it comes to researching for the best price on stuff, and Amazon is often right there. And no, I don't want to wait 4-5 days for "super saver" shipping. I want my stuff in one or two days.

When I was OCD tv shopping, I looked everywhere for a great deal. Finally found one on Amazon for a 60" plasma. Best price by far, free shipping, and "white glove" delivery included. Come on! Can't beat it with a stick.
