***Update***

I decided to roll the dice on it and as expected, it was a scam seller. Figured it was too good to be true and it was. Refund received.

***

Maybe worth a shot, but it's sold by a 3rd party and not Amazon Warehouse. It you don't get it, Amazon will refund you.

Warehouse risks. I bought a set of Capri shallow impacts for $17. I didn’t check who was selling it. Turns out is was someone named mixed bag media. I got a genuine Capri box filled, although not fitting properly, with chrome sockets, all unbranded, but a mix of Taiwan and Japan stampings. Amazon refunded no problem, so not the worst experience, but who does this stuff?

Lol I had a similar thing happen and it was also a capri tool. I ordered the extra long 12mm and 14mm box end wrench and I recieved a Gearwrench 5/16 or something regular combination wrench. Mine was a warehouse order.

You have cheap tools, you want better. So you order a set, out the good stuff in your toolbox and the cheap back in the package, return it to Amazon. The person checking returns doesn't know tools, they could be checking a set of bedsheets next.

There are a lot of entitled people who don't see this as wrong. Same types that eat food at the grocery store and just stash the wrapper or buy a lawnmower in the spring and return it "broken" every fall.

While delivering to a supermarket in a particularly affluent suburb of our nations capitol; I could always count on the assistant manager cracking me up with the latest in return scams from the wealthiest of individuals. One socialite customer routinely had his housekeeper re-wrap the flower bouquets purchased the day prior, and return them to the supermarket after his event. The same customer on more than one occasion, I was told, would purchase whole lobsters, and return all but the lobster tails, claiming the lobsters were no good!

I got a few bad ones. A couple obviously defective returns and one Bessey corner fixture clamp swapped to a cheap woodworking clamp. I quit ordering multi packs of cutoff wheels and the like after receiving 1 piece too many times.

Most orders have been good though.

I was buying a good bit of Amazon warehouse deals there for a while. Mostly good stuff with damaged packaging. Last 3-4 items have been duds. I bought a couple of used like new 1-1/4” drill bits about a month ago. Someone had burned them up and then took a grinder to them. I sent them back, they were definitely not like new. I couldn’t believe how bad they were.

As near as I can tell, they rate the packaging not the actual item. I completely gave up on items that are supposed to be X10 or X25 or whatever multiples of items. 90% of the time you receive one item.

I did however, score a Drill America set of cobalt S&D drills from 1/2" to 1" in 64th increments in a holder for $475 and they were indeed new and exactly what they were supposed to be. Deals like that keep me looking.

I usually look closely at the description. If they say the product will come in original packaging then it’s usually a good indication that the damage listed is for the box, not the product inside it. If it doesn’t come in original packaging then it’s usually the product itself they’re describing. I tend to avoid those listings unless it a really good deal and doesn’t have any easily breakable parts.

I've had a lot of bad luck recently too, and the prices have gone way up on most of the stuff I've been looking at, not worth saving 10 maybe 20% and having no warranty.

I have bought some really nice tools that I wanted but would have never paid full price for in the past 3-4 years. I think I only sent back one item that came damaged. Then about 6 months ago, it turned into more bad than good. Plus, like you say, the really good discounts don’t seem as common.

Yeah, that timeframe jives with my experience as well. What's gotten me recently quite a few times is wrong items in the right boxes, really frustrating and the way Amazon handles it makes you feel like the guilty party at times. And as you may know, too many returns gets you on their naughty list.

I''ll confirm this also matches my experience

There are Amazon "return bins" stores popping up around here. Before Christmas me daughter was shopping at one that had an "everything for $15/item" sale. She found a sealed brown box that just said Fuji on it. She ask someone to open it. It was 35mm lens !

She bought it. Not wanting to deal with unknown people on Marketplace or Craiglist, she sold it to a local camera shop for several hundred $$$ !!

How is it different than alcohol?

Just picked it up this morning. Unsurprisingly, was a single wrench. Went thru the system to get a live person, was refunded without the need to return. According to CS agent, the set should be a 6pc, which would be a great price (they were not able to confirm if they were six different sizes, or six duplicates).

Our local Bargain Hunts do a weekly rotation of amazon returns.

They pick out the good stuff and put it for about 20-25% of retail, then the other stuff starts a $7/item on the first day and goes down $1/day till they replace the bins in a week.

In a similar story I got a godox studio flash for around $20 from there. Also found a pile of 3d printer filment for $4/spool a few times.

Some of the stuff... you wonder why anyone ever bought it. Heck why anyone ever bothered making it.

I agree with the damaged package stuff and will try it every time when available. I purchased a Warn M8000S winch from Amazon as a damaged package for 1/3 of retail this spring. It took about 6 weeks to ship, but what arrived was a new in stapled carton with some damage to the outer cardboard box.
