After a lot of searching on Amazon's home page I found a way to contact them about the problem.

it happens often enough that i saved the number in my phone:

Amazon Customer Circus: 206-922-0865

for best results, be looking at the order detail page when you call. they will want the order number, and possibly other details.

and remember: this is not that person's fault. they know you are upset and frustrated, that is all they deal with. start with exactly what is wrong. dont question how this happens. tell them "it's been a long day, any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated." they are limited in their options, especially for bigger ticket items, but sometimes i have been surprised . . . . .

I received a pair of these. They are definitely used, not like new, as in used for some dirty work and one finger tip busting out. Don't think I am going to send them back for $12 but might send a photo to see if they will discount them further.

Not complaining Duker. I've received far more good stuff cheap than problems.

As long as you don’t have to box it up to return it if something is wrong......

DeWalt DXCMV5076055 60 gallon 5 hp Two Stage Air Compressor

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01IR1GPM0/?ie=UTF8&condition=all

First of all, thanks Duker for all the posted deals. I've ordered probably about 5 things you've posted, the only issue I've had was with a quantity - A box of 24 box cutters was only 1 box cutter. Amazon refunded the cost no issue though and had me keep the box cutter.

What do fellow Amazon Warehouse Dealers think the chances would be that I'd receive this Dewalt compressor in good condition? Think it's worth the risk for the ~$400 discount? I'm nervous after seeing the received condition of that vise.

I was tempted as well. I would almost want to jump on a call and get some type of assurance that they'll come back and pick it up (and box it) if it doesn't come as advertised (functional).

It's a great deal, but I decided to stay away from it. I'd rather just buy something local and not have to worry about it.

They recently shipped me a "Like new" Gladiator 4' Workbench. It was missing one of the pair of legs! After that experience I've vowed to never buy anything heavy or awkward from the warehouse. The return is too much of a PIA.

I ordered one of those a few months ago and only got the legs! From the condition of the box the top was lost in shipping.

I'll echo what someone else posted recently - large/heavy/ungainly items are too big of a gamble IMHO. They have been shipped at least twice already (once each way) and possibly more than that (if somebody else purchased/returned the warehouse item already) and probably in poor packaging, as Amazon has not figured out how to properly package large/heavy/ungainly items properly.

Count on it arriving damaged and then needing to go through the hassle of temporarily holding the return for UPS and then meeting UPS for the pickup (or dropping off yourself).

Then there's the chance of hidden damage that you don't notice at first.

In short, not worth it IMO. You're better off following the Lowes/HD threads for a good deal on a compressor. I recently found a nice smaller DeWalt at HD for 75% off, and it was new/unused.

It's a gamble... I'm probably 50% on things I order from warehouse deals, but considering they pay shipping to return the item it's no cost to me to try...

My guess... *maybe* it got damaged in transit and never made it to the end-user? Or maybe the end-user refused it because it was scratched up? I would think if it's a major loss like the pump is cracked in half or the motor is missing they would have bothered to resell it....

Considering you can get other cheap 5HP new units for about $900... I don't know if the savings is there to justify the cost...

My guess is tank got scratched... maybe the belt guard got bent? If it was major the shipping company probably would have had to eat the cost of damages...

while not *that* big, i have ordered large things from AWD before.

from a packaging perspective, where you seem to get into trouble is when someone returns something, and it is just put into a larger box to send it to you.

and yes, they will send someone to pick up large things. the down side is that you need to repack it, and you need to hang around for them to come.

from the compressor description:

Large cosmetic imperfection(s) on top, front or sides of item. Missing manual. Accessories may have cosmetic damage. Item will come repackaged.

were i to guess, i would suspect something hit it while it was in the warehouse. they go out of their way to mention damage to the "accessories" (of which there is no mention on the product page), and mention "large cosmetic damage".

i also would not be thrilled if that large tank had a big scrape along the side. i would not feel comfortable that some droid there looked it over and decided that the damage was "cosmetic". the catastrophic failure of such a thing is not a pretty picture.

and, sadly, i dont have a lot of faith in their ability to "repackage" something like this.

were you the neighbor asking for a recommendation, i would advise against it. if you went ahead, i would tell the kids to stay away from your house for a few weeks . . . . . of course, the youngest is a teenager now, and it is doubtful they would listen, but i digress . . . . .

you would think, but i have gotten things from AWD in a pretty clean external box, where the internal box looks like it survived a war. parts missing, bolts sheared off. even a cursory glance inside the obviously damaged box would tell you that what was inside was unusable. sometimes the previous "return" UPS label is still taped to the box (with the original outbound label underneath, or the return authorization page is still inside it).

i assume that the people who process these things are graded on their volume per hour, not the lack of secondary (or tertiary) returns on a given item. . . . .

In my experience it seems that Amazon does not usually inspect returned items, and instead immediately sells them as AWD. In fact, I have observed that AWD sometimes sells items before they are even returned ("due back in stock on [date]"), meaning that the listed condition is impossible for them to know. This lack of actual inspections would explain how so many bizarre items are received from AWD.

A small example: a couple weeks ago I ordered a fixture in chrome, listed as "used - good - minor damage". I received a new, sealed item but white instead of chrome. Even the briefest inspection would have caught the difference in color. And why list it as damaged when it is actually new/sealed? Similarly, I ordered a different fixture listed as "used - good - minor damage" and received another new/sealed item. It was impossible to even see the condition until I opened the packaging.

I am thinking that with the volume of returns that they receive, they have found it less expensive to immediately resell returns on AWD instead of paying for staff to inspect before listing on AWD. In other words, they leave the inspection to customers, and the customer usually keeps the item, meaning Amazon usually sells AWD items without incurring the cost of staff inspecting items.

If this is all true, if an item suffered massive damage (as we often see in this thread), Amazon might not know about that until it has been sold as an AWD - maybe more than once.

I have purchased several AWD items and am at about 80% success. (Thanks Duker, you make me spend money)

If the item is big and hard to ship, consider how many times it was shipped - at least 3, maybe 4.

Once to Amazon if not drop shipped

Time 2 to first customer

Time 3 back to Amazon

Time 4 to you.

If it was bulky / hard to ship, likely it can get damaged in 4 trips.

In my experience they won't discount, and your only remedy is to send it back for a refund.

I bought the williams tool set posted, and it came up 4 pieces short, all of which Amazon sells individually, totaling about $40. But instead of offering to ship the missing pieces, he said I could send it back and reorder. So they'll pay to ship it back instead of discounting 5% for the missing parts or sending replacements.

I can see the point, since then everyone could claim it was worse than described. But I have to decide whether to send it back or not.

i have actually gotten partial refunds on items. i bought something that was missing the bolt package. when i called to complain, they offered to take it back. when i pointed out that was a lot of work for both of us for 10$ worth of bolts, they offered me a refund of 10$ to pay for the bolts.

one of the people i spoke to (maybe a year or two ago) told me that AWD is a separate company from amazon, and they cannot replace from amazon's stock, and they operate under different rules. i have been told to keep things when regular amazon sent me the wrong item, but that has never happened with AWD. they always want it back, even if they are clearly taking a bath on it.

Ok, you guys have made me a little gun shy to post deals....lol It’s one thing for me to have a hassle to return something but I hate passing on a hassle to someone else. With that said, I know we are all big boys and can make our own decisions so in posting if I see a potential issue I will try and highlight the issue. It’s difficult with AWD deals to discern their real condition as I have received items that have stated they have cosmetic damage and yet they were new with the worst being beat up packaging. Others on the other hand, were nothing like they described. Net of these hassles, I have fared pretty well thanks to Amazon’s return policy. I am hoping others are in the same situation.

Please don't stop posting! Its buyer beware - the large items are always the largest potential hazard because of returning them. You have to determine if its worth your trouble. I would figure what you want to do if things go wrong. I think enough arguing / communication you get it all patched up but Amazon is here daily almost so perhaps I am a good customer :)

Regardless please please please keep posting the deals!

I have benefited from many of the deals you have posted on here, please don't stop posting. If you stop posting, I will have no idea that I might need that item at some point in the future.

First, thanks for the comments guys, I intend to keep posting. I was just lamenting my frustration with the AWD process.

The box of $hit came earlier this week. My wife thought I was kidding when I said I had ordered a box $hit from eBay. I wasn’t joking when I said it was going to my Mom for Mother’s Day. My mom loves to cook and there are very few things you can buy for an 83 year old that she doesn’t already have except laughs and new spices!

Thanks for posting all the deals that you have Duker. I’ve benefited several times and everything has come as described or better so far.

My wife, however, might hate you 😉

Don't stop posting Duker! We all know the risks with purchasing from AWD, it's kind of like their version of a surplus-outlet or 2nd hand store... lol. At least AWD makes it no hassle to return something (always on their dime) if need be.

I agree it's hard to discern what is wrong with the item, I'm sure a person has only a few seconds to look over an item and click a few check-boxes on the computer before moving on to the next item. Their choices in "damage" seem somewhat limited and generic.

My best AWD deal that I'm tickled with was a pair of solid-brass wire wheels for my bench grinder. I think I paid ~$24, full price was like $75... It looked like one of the wheels might have been hardly used, the other was brand new!

I'll second the opinion that the Duker should not stop posting. I got my Nepro's T handle in practically perfect condition the other day. Pretty pumped about it. It is a beauty.
