OH!, I thought those racks were made for the bathroom. :)

[emoji23] the first time I saw them I thought Dr. Office waiting room or bathroom. Someone in this tread a few months back snagged a couple and used them in the garage/shop and I've been looking for a cheap rack since.

The Akro totes are much stronger. They’ll take a lot more abuse than the cheaper crates. It’s not worth the extra premium for totes your getting into once or twice a year. But for using day in and day out they’re worth it. They’re used heavily in places like grocery stores where they get bounced around, overloaded, and then stacked 10 high. And they take it without complaint. The folding lids are a big benefit in that situation since the lid always stays with the tote and can’t get lost.

Serious question- other than Amazon Prime delivery, do they offer any advantage over these at $50/6? :headscrat https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-12-Gal-Tough-Storage-Bin-in-Black-206100/207207157

(I hate the folding lids on the Akros and can't picture any situation where they would be a legitimate advantage... maybe there is one?)

I hate detachable lids that get broken or separated, and totes that crack or break under normal use. I have about 4 dozen of this style of tote, used during my last move. I've got a couple loaded up with brass so heavy that I can't hardly lift them, but they take the weight and don't fail.

The only downfall to the Akro Mils totes is that they are not water resistant, water will pool and go inside them.

and don't buy the imitations that are sold by Global Industrial -- they are garbage. I bought a 6pack and the plastic is brittle (and they distort) - i have parts of these that are broken and i have had them only a year and do not get in them that often.

@BroncoAZ I'm a bit confused. Which brand do you have the brass in? I had a couple filled with documents going to the shredding company. The bottom on the akro mills totes bowed downward from the wieght of the paper

Interesting, we have a lot of the Global Industrial ones at work and prefer them over the Akros, curiously for the reasons you suggest. We find the GI ones are less brittle and don't crack in freezing temperatures like the Akros do, and they don't bend and deflect like the Akros do.

I wonder if you received something different from Global than we did?

Regardless, probably not a big issue for most people and applications, either is probably fine.

The 39120 12.5” tall totes with probably 60-70# of once fired rifle casings. The bottom may indeed bow some when moving them, but they have held up. My previous cheap plastic totes broke under the weight just sitting in the garage.

I know people get pissed going off-topic, but to address my experiences with various attached lid totes, distribution containers, or whatever you want to call them. I have a number of different brands. 30-35 total totes. I bought a bunch for our move. I didn't want the movers to pack all the tools, etc (a good time for them to sprout legs).

My observations are the following:
No-name home depot - clear, thin, fragile plastic. Most of these were broken in our move, none of the others saw any kind of damage.
AkroMills - plastic is more flexible and the lids don't pop down together as well as others
Orbis - I have ones made of recycled plastic. Pretty rigid, close nicely. 2nd favorite
Quantum Storage - these are my favorites, I have several sizes, probably 15 total totes. Close the best and stay closed. Pretty rigid plastic, nice molded hand holds on the sides, bottom and top is textured.

This is the box ( Grey) that i ordered. They are brittle (lid edges have cracked on 2/6 that i have) and bow easily (unheated garage) - i have 25# in two boxes stacked and they have bowed more than the Akro bins that i have over 75# in. As for the bottoms, i have a lot of heavy parts, so i cut a piece of 1/2" plywood and put in the bottom of all my bins (unless i fill with lightweight parts). i don't usually stack my bins. they are typically on individual shelves.

That's really strange, we have had no cracking problems or bowing even with around 100 lbs per box. We ordered three sizes but have not had issues with any of them, not sure if they are that specific size or not. I guess it's possible that one particular one is made by a different company or something.

How long ago did you order them from Global? I wonder if they might have changed manufacturers. Ours have been ordered over the last 18 months or so, with no apparent difference between different orders in that time period.

Edit to add: I wonder if they are subcontracting the manufacture and different manufacturers use somewhat different materials? For those of us in the midwest, our Akro boxes shipped from a plastic molder in Ohio.

For those who received cracked or damaged Akro boxes, did they ship from somewhere else?

Maybe you guys bought the Buckhorn boxes from Global Industrial? i bought the "better value" boxes that are made by a Global Industrial contractor -- i will have to look to see if they are imported or made here. Also, i just looked up Akro-Mils (they have a plant in my home town in Ohio) and it looks like their parent company also owns Buckhorn -- also made in Ohio.

Has anyone else noticed the brand listing in the warehouse has dropped off? I clicked on it yesterday (at the bottom where it says see more brands), and there were only a handful with the rest of the letters grayed out. There are normally hundreds just in the home improvement section. Now there is none. When you go to see more brands there are none listed. You can still search brand names within the bar at the top, but I don't know why the brand designation changed basically in the last day.
