I have a security light (metal halide) on the front of my shop. It attracts so many bugs, that I am constantly cleaning bugs out of the shop. The june bugs just love it.

Is there an amber bulb for a metal halide light?

I am not against changing out the whole fixture, just want something that will not attract bugs.... any suggestions?

I would suggest a motion sensing fixture with floods. Presumably, you're lighting the area for security reasons. If so, and something is moving about, the light will come on and stay off when there isn't anything there. I suggest this partially as a solution to your problem but partially becuase those on-all-night lights really **** for those neighbors who cherish darkness at night!

Metal halide lights have a strong blue output that strongly attracts bugs.
Some (not all) metal halide fixtures can use a high pressure sodium bulb (NOT to be confused with low pressure sodium). Their more orange glow still has enough blue to attract bugs, but nowhere near as badly.

I would follow Oly's advice.

A constantly on security light gives a bad guy a way to plan his entry....and uses a lot of eletricity....

Whereas a motion sensor does not give away your protection....until he trips the sensor...you see the light come on and it gets your attention....

Additionally, not having a light on all the time does not attract attention to your garage. If the light is on all the time....it's making it visable to anyone driving by.
