Hi guys,

Here are a few photos of my almost complete shop. I suppose it will never be finished now that I have moved into it and started working before it was complete. I have no pictures of the construction. They were lost during the big computer meltdown of last year.

With the exception of the excavation, All of the work was done by me. I sawed every board and hammered every nail. I even set the trusses single handedly. I had to rig up so many braces, supports and other helping hand type devices it almost cost me my sanity. I got it done though.

The main shop is 32 x 32. The front carport is 32 x 24 and the rear carport is 32 x 12. I had three needs when I designed it. I had to have a place to keep the stuff related to my lawn maintenance business. That stuff will be kept out back so I don't have to look at it. The front carport is for parking of the daily drivers. The shop is for maintenance and working on the projects.

As you can see things are not going according to plan. I was renting my elderly neighbor's large two car garage to keep everything in during my construction. She sold her place and the new owner wanted his garage. I had thirty days to get get my place to lockup. All the finishing work was done with tools equipment and vehicles in the way.

Because my work is seasonal, I'm finally getting the place in order over this winter. There will be more pictures soon.

Nice. That looks bigger inside than I thought it would, kinda like the "Tartis" sp? I've got both a red and a white '77 AMX or as I refer to them " Glorified Hornets" returning to earth at the bottom of my property waiting on me to build a garage. Someday soon I hope while they still have a shape.

That's a great setup with the overhangs - gives you a nice area to work on nice days, and leaves some storage room outside of the shop area. Very cool!

Yes. Our local government has placed restrictions on land use. My lot size is about .65 of an acre. Up to about .8 of an acre I can only have a 100 square meter (1,076 square foot) detached shop. Carports are excluded from floor area calculations. In fact I can cover up to a third of my property with carport.

I already have a neighbor who hates men, my shop, cars, motorcycles, anything with an internal combustion engine or anything else that emits what she refers to as either sound, air, noise or light pollution. She knows the by-laws. She would blow the whistle on me for sure, if I attempted to enclose the carports.

I actually like it like that - it still keeps the cars out of the snow and rain, but you won't have to deal with a garage door every time you need to go somewhere. The garage then is kept separate from the daily drivers, and is more of a work area than a car storage area. I know you did it by necessity, but it's a really nice setup - in my opinion, anyway

Is that an early Hornet? How about some pics. Do you have any other AMC vehicles. My Dad bought a 70 360 HI PO Javelin back in 1970, my love for muscle cars was born. Most popular line, "open the scoop dad". They had a functional vacuum operated hood scoop which made a gnarly growl when you stepped hard on the throttle.

Lees, The ceiling height is 14' 6''. The 2x6 walls are 12' high. They sit on a 4' concrete wall. 18'' of the concrete wall must be below grade for frost protection. That leaves me with 2' 6'' of concrete above the floor. There was a reason for doing it this way. The city requires a concrete wall over 4' or a wall over 12' to have an engineer's stamp on the plan. That would have cost me several hundred dollars more and that again in materials.

I figured 14' 6'' was adequate anyhow so away I went. I will be building a mezzanine floor just above the wall cabinets. I'll have a foot of head room under it and still a few inches of headroom when I'm up on it.

uniongoon, Here is a quick picture of the Hornet. It's a`76 Hornet X, 258 six, automatic. It only has 15,000 original miles on it. It was bought new by a 75 year old man back in `76. He was only able to drive it for a short while before his health failed him. After he passed away, it sat in his garage from some time in `78 until his wife passed away in 2001. It has never seen snow. In fact, from the looks of it, I don't think it's ever been driven on wet pavement.

I also have a `74 Gremlin drag car. It had a 360 when this picture was taken. It ran a best time of 11.36 @ 120 mph. I'm currently building a fairly stout 258 six for for it. I'm planning on running similar times with the help of a little nitrous. It'll probably run mid twelves without.

tonydanzah, We rarely get snow. Maybe two events per winter. If it does snow, it's wet, heavy and comes straight down. Average winter temperature is well above freezing.

Not trying to resurrect a dead thread here, just proud that I can finally say, IT'S DONE. I only had the front gable to finish before I could call for my final inspection. That was on friday. It passed.

I can now put away the carpentry tools. I've got a car to get ready for this racing season.
