Hey All,

I finally wanted to share my build. I lurked on here for a while before joining when I got to the inside stage in December and wanted some ideas.

I had a 23'x23' at my old house but we decided to move last year to be closer to family with the pending arrival of our first born. A garage was on the list of priorities but when all was said and done we chose a place with no garage based on location; with intent to build. We added a "plus improvements" to the mortgage in order to do so. They ended up giving us half of what we asked for though so I tried to do as much myself as possible as opposed to building half the garage I wanted!

This was the existing storage they had. It was a shed with an open side that faced South about 18'x8' with 3 seperate bays. When we first moved this is where I threw a bunch of junk and garbage - I banged my head so many times on this... But I ended up re-using parts of it. I actually took a sawzall and cut the middle bay out. I moved one bay for lawn tractor storage and kept one near the house for garbage / recycling (and head banging) until the garage was up. The 2 bays are now re-united, just a little closer together than originally.

We moved in May but I didn't get started on the build until late September. The aforementioned baby came in June, we had a trip to PEI in August and my work was moving to a building 3x bigger at the end of September. Plus I thought Fall would be a nice time of year to work... I'd say I was 50% right on that.

Found a guy to do the little excavating required on Sunday Sept 23 and I was off to the races. Got the forms up that day and got rebar and wire mesh ready during the evenings that week for the slab pour which happened on the 28th. View media item 28810View media item 28811View media item 28812
The work move went off with out a hitch and I got my materials delivered the next week so I could start building Thanksgiving weekend (first weekend in Oct here in Canada). Got 2 walls up on the Saturday and completed the other 2 on the holiday Monday. View media item 28813View media item 28814View media item 28815
Here's the garage in relation to the house - about 18 feet away

The trusses came in time to go up the next weekend. Had help from my dad and a few friends for this - thankfully.

My biggest delay on the whole project came on the roof. I decided to go with metal which added some cost and apparently a big delay. It was supposed to be there the same time as the trusses. I lost the rest of that weekend and the next. It turns out somehow the order had never gone through. Oh well. Of course the weekend it finally came had a forecast of rain. Luckily I still got one helper and even in the drizzle and near freezing temps I got the roof on.

I ended up doing all of the soffit and fascia in the evenings - here's where working in the Fall wasn't what I'd expected. It was cold, dark and frosty out there. I typically worked for about 3 hours a night after 7:30 when the baby went down. I could hear the coyotes howling in the bush and I hoped they weren't waiting for me to topple from the top of the frosty ladder.

The siding went fairly well. I installed the corners and starter strips on a Saturday and had my Dad's help on the Sunday. I ended up taking the Monday off work to complete it myself.

I'll have to make the rest into a part 2... time is slipping away from me. To be completed soon!

Welcome to GJ. Looking forward to seeing some pics of this. I did a lot of my refurbishment over the winter months too (albeit in the UK rather than Canada) so know what you went through being out there in the frost! Well done - winter is almost behind us now with each day becoming slightly warmer and the daylight longer! You can get on with enjoying using the space throughout the better part of the season.

SO... I can squeeze in a little more before I leave work. It's a Sunday...

Apart from a little trim and the garage door that was mostly it for the outside. I had a difficult enough time with said garage door. To be honest it still isn't functional. It's installed and lifts manually, but I never got the torsion spring operating properly, and I couldn't be bothered in the cold. Really I had no need to get in there - the garage is intended to be more of a wood-working shop for me and I don't park in it. I did try to set the torsion spring but the cables would come off the winding track and pinch. I was getting in more of a mess than anything. I'll tackle it in the next month or two I suppose.

Here's a more finished outside pic. Love that the snow slides right off the metal roof. (Didn't love it the first time; I may have nearly got covered)

I ran 40 amps to the garage. Lights and a few tools is all I needed. More than enough for my purposes.

Insulation and vapour barrier:

I was so excited to finally get a few things moved in and out of the basement

Here are some inside pics - I ended up going with a colour called Drum beat which perfectly matched the metal roof, but just on one wall. I had thought about trying some interesting camo pattern or going with a teal colour to match my San Jose Sharks afflication but actually liked the idea of the red tone. Saw a lot of examples of it here on GJ.
OSB on three walls; bottom 4 feet of painted wall plywood for rigidity and the drywall got the red.

Still not completely finished. Still some touches to add, and I may still do something on the floor someday. The only big pain will be to move out the shelving.
Also haven't decided 100% on heat. I had a wood stove in my old garage but with it came more mess. I like the cleanliness and I'm leaning towards alternatives. Of course now I don't get as much time out there either with our son taking up a good amount of our time. A tiny little electric heater I've been running takes the chill off and gets the temp to between 5 and 10 degrees Celcius.

I'll continue to comb the site for ideas as like many of you I believe the garage becomes something that constantly changes seeking out improvement!

I didn't know it works with an url to an album on your own CP, so I'm gonna try that.
I always use the attachments and upload the files but than your limited to 7 pictures

the album was set to private - hence why I thought it was fine. Lesson learned! Sorry for the disappointments to those who couldn't see. Thanks for pointing that out Sunbimmer; and for the compliment too!

My wife runs 2 of the oil filled radiators in her building. It's a 20'x20'. She runs one on medium most of the time, but if it gets real cold, she'll kick the second on on medium and it stays a nice 70 degrees in there.

I have one in my garage and I'll kick it on to help offset the propane. A couple of times I forgot to shut it off and I came out the next morning when it was around 10 degrees out and my garage was 63 degrees. My garage is a 28'x36' but only 2x4 walls. My wifes building is 2x6 walls.

Kevin - What's "real cold" where you are?

I'll stick with what I have + a toque for the rest of this year as I've almost made it through the worst. I'll contemplate my options for the coming winter. What you suggest is likely the route I'll take unless that soft spot inside of me for a wood stove grows again. I just hate the space it takes up, not to mention the wood pile too...

Thanks.

We've been working on renovating our kitchen - so I've been putting the work shop to good use. We're stripping and sanding our cupboard doors down to the natural maple. Bad part = messy & dusty

I have however found some time in there to convert an old desk from my work into a new work bench. It's still a work in progress but here's basically where it started to where it is now. Still would like to add 2 doors under it and I need to apply a bunch of coats of urethane on top for durability.

Also did add an oil filled heater I got on clearance for 50% off. Seemed to be helping, however then this past weekend it got warm (above freezing)anyway. Go figure!

For me, it's anything below 70F.

We'll hover around 20F in the winter anymore. Sometimes it may get down below zero. Other than snow, this winter, as far as temperature goes, has been fairly decent.

Nice build and welcome, were practically neighbour's compared to the mix on the forum. I see a little German influence as your garage art. Nice!

Thanks! Yeah, basically just opposite ends of the city is all! I do have a bit of German ancestry - The eagle also graces my goalie mask - I'll have to see if I can dig out a photo of it sometime.

I really like your garage too, I've checked it out many times. A bit of a different genre than mine but very clean and well thought out. You're like a miracle worker in that space!
