I picked up a big lot of railroad iron and a post vise today and along with it came this sledge hammer head. Did some work on it and it looks to say: A.B. CO and ALLOY 8 (I did weigh it, it is 8 pounds) on the other side. Could this be an American Bridge Company sledgehammer head? It looks like their kind of rare.
Thanks

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
Nice score. That's one great hammer.

That hammer has seen it's share of spikes... not sure why someone would scrap it, it's got at least another 100 years of life left... 8 pounders are a great general size, and the Nevada head concentrated that power well... slap a handle in it and let 'er rip!

Yeah it was an old derelict blacksmith shop that I cleaned out, the sledge was in a pile of pressure treated wood along with a ton of spikes, I'll see how she cleans up
