The last 1/2" Bosch corded hammer drill I looked at a few weeks back was tagged with a Made in Germany COO.

My bosch cordless was supposedly made in mexico, then I took the battery off and saw that it was made in china.

Metabo's are made in europe I think, can't think of any us made drills except a used milwaukee. I'd actually try to hunt down a USA made milwaukee that hasnt been abused.

Germany is European... right?

LOL.

The Op's post stated this:
Looking to buy a american or european made corded drill. I think Hilti makes one, is there anyone else?

thanks!

The Bosch corded I looked at was Made in Germany.

If he/she want a US made corded drill, it may likely have to be an older unit as few if any I see anymore are US made.

Bosch cordless are both Malaysian made or Chinese(some rare Swiss made ones may still be out there), with the battery usually made in Mexico, Malaysia or now China. Chargers are made in China.

Last makers of US corded drills were Porter Cable and Milwaukee IIRC.

Last US made power tool I bought was a Skil Circular saw about 8 years ago. My new DeWalt miter saw is made in Mexico. At least that is in North America. Arn't Snap-on power tools US made?

Fein makes the best one for me... and Hilti right behind them.. Germany for the Fein and I'm not sure for the Hilti.. likely EU someplace.

Btw. I'm selling a mint condition Makita 8443D with all the box and batteries that's made in England in the classified area.

I looked around for some 3/8" and 1/2" American made drills and was disappointed when I LOOKED for them. Then one day I was at a garage sale where I stumbled into two nice drills for $5 each. One is a 1980s Milwaukee 1/2" VSR 2-speed hammer drill and the other was a Bosch 3/8" VSR. The Bosch needed a new cord and the internal connection was corroded is all. I'm still scratching my head about the hammer drill because it works fine, so maybe the guy didn't know how it works. :)

BTW, the hammer drill can be used in normal drill operation (non-hammer).

That hammer drill was one of the first real drills I owned (still own). Although I used it a lot, it's not really very good at anything. Too long, too slow and too heavy. It does make a great back-up drill though. It's OK for hammering if your bit is 3/8" or smaller, or into concrete block.

You didn't pay $5 for it though, right? :D

Bought this several years ago when they were still made in the USA.
The newer imported Milwaukee tools have a brighter red color and somehow look cheaper

I've got one of that model with a geared chuck and it's been a great drill. I've got a 3/8" with a similar keyless chuck, and I don't care for it. It's difficult to adjust with my giant hands.

I'd look around CL or Ebay for an older Black&Decker Professional or a Milwaukee. The older Metabo are nice also.
Here's a list of the 'Pro' drills I own. The drills I use most often are the 3/8 Milwaukee and the 1/2 B&D. The 1/2 B&D is a triple reduction and has more torque and is smaller than any of the other 1/2 drills. If you ever run across one of these, buy it:thumbup:

Year Bought

  • 77 - 1/2 B&D Pro
  • 88 - 3/8 B&D Pro 2 speed
  • 96 - 1/2 Milwaukee
  • 08 - 3/8 Milwaukee angle
  • 87 - 1/2 Metabo 2 speed
  • 90 - 5/8 Metabo hammer 2 speed

I have this drill. It's a delight to use.

All of my Milwaukee corded tools are US-made, but they are all at least 15 years old. The new stuff, to me at least, looks like "copies" of the older stuff. The plastic looks cheaper, and some of the aluminum body sections are plastic on some of the tools. Some are still aluminum, but painted gray. Of course, most is China made, or has no COO on the tool itself.

The old Milwaukee tools I have will probably outlast me.
