My grandfather Thornton MacKay and family owned and operated Morse Twist Drill in New Bedford Mass as well as SW Card manufacturing in Mansfield Mass from the mid thirties untill his death in 1956. Shortly after WWll when we were helping to rebuild Japans industrial complex a Japanese company sent my grandfather a tiny drill bit with a challenge to make a smaller one of the same quality and precision. Not only did he produce such a bit, he drilled a hole through their bit with it , left it through theirs and sent it back to them

Is this story suppose to make me happy? Which in some way it did. Or is it suppose to make me sad and angry about what America has become which it certainly did as well. You talk about American Yankee Pride, WHERE DID IT GO? I remember when Cadillac's motto was "Standard of the World." If they would say that today they would get laughed out of the room by Toyota.

It's a tall tale, and an OLD one at that. I've heard it told and retold many times over the six decades of my life, with the only variation being the industry: Swiss vs German watchmakers, rival hypodermic needle makers, screw machine manufacturers, and now twist drills.

Ummm...I don't think you need any story at all to make you angry. 😏

I think you need to look around you more and keep up with what is important in the 21st century and beyond. Think about what this world would be without GPS, Internet, abundance of energy, medical devices, drugs to cure devastating illnesses, new innovations in organ transplants and surgery, space exploration, industrial automation, Artificial Intelligence. All of these are a product of American ingenuity.

When I look at what we are still developing everyday it makes me proud to be an American!

How old are you?

That motto was coined over 100 years ago, when, most of the rest of the world traveled by horse.

We had Cadillacs in the 60’s and 70’s they were not really better that other similar sized “luxury” cars. The electric windows were always needing work

I've actually heard this story before, and (somewhere) I saw a picture of it... yes, it's pretty cool the technology our forefathers had to do stuff like this, and while I'm surprised someone (with only a couple posts) is related to it, it's pretty effing awesome.

James, thought you might like to see my Morse cabinet. I bought it about 30 years ago in Clarence, NY at an antique market. I thought it had a date on it but didn’t see any on the labels inside. It’s used to store surplus drill bits.
