Hello All,

I'm in the market for a brake lathe. Of course, AMMCO lathes turn up on Craigslist most frequently. I'm surprised at the number of people who don't know or don't bother to look at the model number on the lathe, but it is what it is.

What is the easiest way to tell a AMMCO 3000 from a 4000 from pictures? Is there something that stands out?

3000 is drum brakes only, 4000 is a combo disc and drums. The 4000 has a second power feed opposite the feed knob. Should have a 2 speed lever on it.

I just bought a 4000 yesterday. I used SearchTempest to search all craigslist cities within 500 miles from my house.ad02af33101278eb657ed2541b130dc0.jpg

I have a 4000 bought it used 10 or so years ago for 850 with the stand and all acc. All it needed was a new light and the boot for the spindle. 4000 is a disc and drum lathe , parts were available then .Mine looks like the one in the pic above

I went to the ammco web site and sent in my serial number and they were able to tell me when mine was made and sold.614ab73a38215de9c93cd3b6304438b7.jpg

We had a 4000 at the shop, but it was sold as it became increasingly cheaper to buy new discs and it wasn't being used (maybe the occasional drum). On newer cars, the tolerances for wear where less too... so you didn't have much life left after cutting.

New to The Forum but I've been a brake lathe sales and service technician for over 22 years now. So what did they tell you? More than likely that's a square top 4000 manufactured in 1998. Going by the first two digits of the serial number. The earlier Round Top machines they're harder to tell the year. You can't tell just by the serial number. I have a spreadsheet of serial numbers that I recorded and I can get a good estimate on when the machine was manufactured. If y'all need any parts I have over 40 machines at my shop some of them are dedicated Parts machines since Ammco is now out of business I have Parts you can't get anymore. So send me a message or reply here and I'll get back to you
