AMMCO Shaper

I saw this ad on Craigslist, where a 7" AMMCO metal shaper is listed. The fellow is listing the whole batch of stuff for $4,000.00, but has the shaper listed to sell for $400.00 by itself. It is in Noti, Oregon.

It looks like a complete machine. Small, but very cute!

That one doesn't look like one you'd want to pursue. It looks like it was stored in the bottom of a lake, it's so rusty. Also, that's a cheap import mill vise on it, not a shaper vise. I strongly suggest you don't buy a shaper unless it has its original vise. It's much harder to find a shaper vise than a shaper with its vise. I always see guys searching endlessly for their missing shaper vise, the one they won't ever find.

I'll respectfully disagree. I bought an Atlas that appeared in far worse shape than that and it cleaned up pretty nicely. That looks like surface rust to me... a little elbow grease and she'd probably be a fairly decent machine. Around these parts, finding a shaper for $400 is a You **** deal. As for the vises, they show up on eBay pretty frequently... be prepared to spend $150 for a nice one, but any small low profile milling vise will work just fine on a little machine like that. I have the original Atlas vise on mine, but I often swap it for a larger Brown and Sharpe if I have a long part.
