amphenol vs deutsch connectors

I'm adding a few connectors of the common deutsch type I see more often to my tacklebox, and I've noticed amphenol are advertised compatible to deutsch, and half the price.

Any reason not to use them? They look decent, but with electrical repairs, it's already broke once, so it's a good place to be very careful about cheaping out on anything.

Not enough information. You're giving manufacturer's names, and they make many different types of connectors. Amphenol is an old and respected name.

Most directly, I'm looking at their parts that are equivalent to Deutsch DTP series of connectors. I believe Amphenol calls them an ATP series of connectors. Then there is the corresponding wedgelocks and stamped pins/sockets (Amp's version of Deutsch size 12 pins/sockets).

Here's a pic of the Amphenol version.

I don't have experience with this particular style, but Amphenol generally builds high quality stuff.

I'll give 'em a try.

I'm not dealing with big dollars here, just trying to have enough of an assortment in the toolbox to deal with whatever I may run into. Although spending $2 a connector instead of $4 means your $50 goes twice as far.

Although I have never used them, my mother worked for them for 30+ years in quality control when their plant was in Danbury CT. I also worked a summer job in mfg there.

They had pretty strict QC standards back then (I remember how angry they were when they had to throw out a batch of connectors because it was slightly out of tolerance...

They since have closed that site (~10 years ago). Don't know much about them now.

I realize this post probably doesn't help much but I couldn't resist, small world...

Either would do a good job . Caterpillar uses deutsch connectors , these style connectors require special crimping pliers to install the pins .

personally i like deutsch type, mainly that is what i work with and have the most at hand when i am at work. both work well and get the job done over, but connectors or spade connectors....

as long as you have the crimping tool you will be good for either of them.

-hence tomjohn's post... i work at a Caterpillar rental yard.. :)

I've used the Deutsch connector for the last decade. Recently they moved their manufacturing over to China, and that was ****. They have since moved it back to North America but to Mexico. The molds now aren't as clean and precise as they were before and there's a bit of flashing and hard edges. Sad to see what was a great connector go downhill in quality :( I had no clue Amphenol made compatible connectors... interesting. The gold plated pins on the Deutsch connectors are really nice and we use those exclusively over any other pin materials.

I worked for a company that made military radio systems back in the 80's, all of their connectors were made by Amphenol. They are a well established company with quality products although not sure what that range are like.

We use both in our shop. The only issue we've had is the amphenol pin locks are much looser in tolerance meaning they can be difficult to remove esp when using them in Deutsch connectors.

Amphenol makes a lot of connectors. The ones I'm talking about are their version of a "deutsch" connector. I'm not really talking about choosing a type of connector, so much as considering the original manufacturer part, or a "generic" (cheaper) copy.

Their are alternatives to the special crimper. You can get stamped, open barrel pins and sockets, instead of the solid, closed barrel ones. They can be crimped with a common weatherpack crimper. The solid ones are more versatile, as you can use them in any connector body. The stamped open barrel terminals don't work so well in any connector body where they have to be removed using the removal tool, from the backside of the connector. For the smaller terminals which use wedgelocks, the stamped connectors are just fine.

I'll change to the closed barrel terminals some day when I have $250 to drop on a hdt-48-00 crimper. Until then, more cost effective means shall prevail.

I'm a Amphenol Sine rep in Canada and i can tell you a lot of top customers like BRP tested our connectors and it passed their tests without any problems.
