Last time I was at the speed shop trying to size a fitting in order to purchase an AN fitting they measured it with a caliper and told me what size it is -

Can someone tell me how to convert this?
I googled it and did not find anything helpful.

For a male fitting (IE i need a female fitting for it)
outside 13.85 mm or .545 in or 35/64"
inside 7.35 mm or .2875 in or 19/64"

For a Female fitting (IE I need a male fitting for it)
outside 18.90mm or .745 in or 3/4"
inside 14.50 mm or .570 in or 9/16"

For anyone who wants to know this is Toyota 4Runner Transmission cooler line.

I would like to know how to do this for future reference as well. Maybe there is a chart somewhere with corresponding sizes?

What about thread pitches?

Justin

TOOL GLOAT - I got one of these 6" calipers that reads MM, IN, and Fractions from chipsfly.com

Multiply 25.4 X inch/thousands = mm divide MM by 25.4 = inch/thousands

25.4 X .3937= 9.99998 or 10mm 10 ./. 25.4 = .3937

You need to get a listing of fitting sizes and convert them to inch or MM depending on the size IE: .375 is 3/8 would not be a 9.5 mm fitting If you know it is MM than use the MM measurements . What ever is closest to it is what it is. IE: 2, 2.5,3,4,5,6,8,10,12,14,16,18, mm and bigger.

Thread pitch is the basic fine/course.

Hope this helps

do you base this on the inside measurement?

Im estimating that if you need a male fitting then you would measure inside

and

If you need a female fitting you measure the outside...

Thanks so much for the help by the way

am i making this harder than it is? can i just take the fraction that my caliper gives me - like in my first post where i said that the male fitting is an OD of 35/64... would this be an -08 AN since (if i understand correctly) this is a 1/2" (well 8/16") male fitting?

If thats the case, how far do you round I mean 35/64 is pretty close to 32/64 but how far is too far?

Thanks for helping this confused individual.

True AN fittings are known by tube sizes. A #4 is a 1/4" OD tube, a #6 is 3/8" OD tube, the number is in 1/16ths of an inch, so a #4 is 4/16" or 2/8" or 1/4", thats how it works.

A #4 "B" nut uses a 9/16" wrench, and a #6 "B" nut uses an 11/16" wrench.

Google AN fittings, look for Speedway Motors Race AN fittings. Click on Fitting size chart. There is a simple chart that may be what you are looking for.

I tried to set the link up but the ...it's me.

Justin,I think your 4Runner uses metric flare fittings, not AN. Are replacing the stock hard line with a stainless braided hose?

that is my intent yes -- I have always had bad luck with oil and ****** lines either seeping or bulging then bursting.
