I have from -3AN to -12AN but have found that NOS fittings are smaller than -3AN

Thanks Charlie. I was eyeballing the set from summit too. They got a kit with cutters, -4 thru -20 and an adjustable from -0 to -8. I really don't need anything past -10 though. Jegs has an adjustable that is -0 to -12 that is also USA made.

Ive used adjustable and non adjustable and i would not recommend The adjustable ones. Maybe it was the brand i was using (not sure what brand) but it was sloppy and lpst ots adjustment constantly. I have the silver jeg wrenches that come with the rack nice usa made

Thank you all for your responses. I will start building the fuel lines for my current project soon and figured it will be a good time to invest in some proper wrenches for AN fittings. I am also going to pick up some koul tools line assembly blocks while I am at it and give them a try.

I was wondering how good the adjustables would be. I will save my self the $50 on the adjustable. Thanks!

I have an adjustable wrench that I tighten and loosen every time I put it on or take it off an AN fitting. I have a good grip and I make it tight.

I highly suggest a pliers Knipex pliers wrench, which is much better and faster, wherever there is enough room to use it. It is $50 though. There is tool for braided lines that helps to the fitting on hoses, I don't have it, but I would like it for that type of work.

If you get the pliers wrench you to the work according to where you can fit it first because it is that much better, faster, and easier in my opinion.

I have a few knipex tools and it is the only one that I like or I think works better than other tool equivalents.

Not to derail the thread too far, but I'm not sure there is even a set of AN wrenches in our race shop and we have a lot of AN fittings on the race cars. I wanted a set for a long time because I thought they looked cool, but I don't feel the need anymore. I would guess with heavy use they wouldnt last long; our race cars are stripped every race.

I've never worked with AN fittings, but.... dude, those look like chunky wrenches, to me - why can't you use... a wrench? They're aluminium, and their big "feature" is that they get short as they get small, to prevent over-tightening.... like every wrench set ever made.

Don't get me wrong, I love wrenches... but it looks like those have SUCH a non-demanding role... Why not carve them out of cold butter?

Undoubtedly made for those who don't want to mar the fittings on their show car.

I have been around re-usable Parker and AeroQuip fittings and hose ends all my career, and have never thought of using anything other than a normal wrench to connect/disconnect these fittings.

I do have the installation tool for the smaller (#4, #6, and #8) sizes.

Yep. A nice clean set of chrome wrenches won't bone them up. I would rather have a dedicated chrome set if you're worried about finish. Once an aluminum wrench starts to spread, it will reek havoc on the aluminum fittings.

there may be some guy to come along a thump me on the head:lol_hitti
but I think I know what i'm talking about here.
AN stands for army/navy. of course is was military.
in the car world many race/drag racers use it, and i'm cool w/ that.
just like many "race" features they seem to trickle down to street or custom/show cars..
if yer gonna use AN fittings than I guess you need AN wrenches.

I aint passing judgment, but it aint for me.

They are generally 15, 17, or 19 mm...at least the ones I've used on projects before anyway...

I could see how a fdp type wrench would scratch em up...but a normal wrench should be fine on them

I put braided line on all my fuel systems, and I have never even seen a an wrench in person.

Looks cool to have, but I have yet to purchase a set.

This is why I wanted to purchase a set to avoid maring of the fittings in the engine bay. I spent alot of time smoothing the engine bay in this car and would like the black AN fittings to stay looking nice as I service the carburator.

My brother in law was a crew cheif for a drag car and I believe he only used regular wrenches. The anodize finish on their fittings were not the best but they were not worried about looks. Tearing down the engine between rounds at lightning speeds prob didn't help either. My brother in law is out of the country right now but will be back on Wed. and I will ask him what he thinks and post. I'm pretty sure he dosen't use these wrenches on the race cars but I could be wrong.

What race shop you at? I used to live in Chandler. I used to help out my buddy out with a mini sprint at manzanita race way. So you say you have never messed up fittings with chrome wrenches. That is interesting. I rather not buy any if this is true. Maybe i will just give it a shot and if the fittings get jacked I will replace the visiable ones and then try the AN specific wrenches. Thanks for sharing your experince.

My team's shop is actually in Los Angeles, we race class 1 in Best in the Desert.

The big thing is having smooth clean wrenches if you don't want to scar up the fasteners. Out in the desert, we really don't care and most of our fittings are pretty old and have been disassembled many times.

That is cool. A friend that I work with had a BFG sponsered baja truck. He recently sold his buggy and got a 67 fastback to restore. It's looking sharp. He choose not to keep it boaringly original. He is out of the desert scene now but I always catch him looking at the desert trucks online. He took me for a ride in that buggy and it was wild! Wish he still had the truck when I met him. he's got some cool pics of it catching air.

Finally spoke to my brother in law about these. Like you other race guys said, he also only uses chrome wrenches but if he needs to keep the finish nice on the AN fittings he wraps electrical tape around the wrench head. He did say he would go in on a set with me if I bought some. Guess he is also curious about how well they work.

But they're so much fun to make.....

I'd rather make hydraulic hoses all day. Less fuss, steel parts. If using 37* hydro fittings they're still sensitive to torque but not much. I don't have "AN" wrenchs but do have a set of "hydraulic" wrenches. They were cheap, ATD brand. Just short open end wrenches. Fit in tight spots nicely.

I really don't get why they won't do a better coating on the AN fittings. I have anodized aluminum stuff that has yet to show a scar and goes through hell yet you drop one of these fittings on a carpet floor and they scratch.

those i have used fit the hex much tighter than a chrome wrnch. when on, it barely wobbles at all and they are king of tricky getting on and off
