So we finally got our new house built and moved right at the beginning of February. At the same time I had my builder pour me a 20x16 pad for shop on our property. Over the long weekend of the 4th I decided I was going to go ahead and build it myself and save some money. Anyway here is my progress after one day and again the last picture after 3 days. I am doing a "lean to" roof with slightly more than a 12/2 pitch with a metal roof. I've never built anything this big before but going ok so far. Did all the obvious things....bottom wall on concrete used PT lumber, everything 16" on center, etc. I framed 3 small windows (got 3 vinyl single hung on sale at lowes a few months ago) and a 5' metal french door off of craigslist. Hard part is next....I have (25) 2x8x18's coming for the roof. I may need wifey to help me but we will see - trying to everything myself just to see if I can do it...LOL

Dude, I grew up on Lake Wylie. I was born and raised in Rock Hill and went to Winthrop. Small world...I am in the Camden SC area now so not too far away. I'm ordering the lumber this week and we see how it goes. I'll keep posting progress. I just fell ***-backwards into a ton of kitchen cabinets for $200 so my shop will be decked out after it gets done. Uppers and lowers. Craigslist is a wonderful place if you can put up with all the fruits, nuts and flakes!

I have no idea what you intend to use that building for but I'll tell you right now that it's too small.
It does seem pretty tight. I had a small 20x12 garage, looked like a covered bridge. Loved it, but if I put a car in it there wasn't much room for anything else.

Is it going to be a woodworking shop?

I am doing woodworking mostly and a shop for my RC Heli's/Jets/etc. I know its small but this is the biggest we could do on our lot without ruining the view of the lake and that's not happening. I moved here for the view, not the garage so I'm lucky to have something at all. You can't build anything on this lot in the 100 yr FEMA floodplain or within 100 ft of the water. To say that I was limited for a footprint was an understatement. The first picture here was taken in 2020 when we bought the land about 2 months before COVID 19 hit and before the dock and house were built but you can see the appeal. The second picture shows the lot from the water while the dock was under construction. My new shop is on the left where the utility building is in the pic. Wifey and I built the dock also - it is 104 ft long and we had to do it with one nail gun, one compressor, one circular saw with a generator (and 2 sets of waders!!). The other pics are some of the many residents in the lake and there are some whoppers in here. Several 10# plus bass have been caught in here the last several years and I saw the pics to prove a few of them. The biggest one was 13.5lbs and was caught by the husband of the lady that sold me the lot. In the picture the bass looks like a 5 gallon bucket....AND he put her back. That was several years ago. Anyway, fun times :)

The eagle has landed. Got my 2x8x18's this morning. Not sure what the cost is in your area but these were $22.99 each, pine #2. Seems pricey but the cost of doing business now, I guess and I was told that price has come down a lot the last few months? Anyway, I noticed that a few of these were snakes when I was moving them to the building and then I realized that I ordered 20 and they delivered 26 so thank you to the building supply company......Now I do not need extra wood for the purlins.

Curved lumber is good for headers, laminate them back to back to get most of the curve out.
I wish I could...Most of these are going to be stand alone rafters from front to back with rows of perlins in between every 48 inches. The span is 16' so that should be perfect for some overhang on each side. Not sure if I need to trim them yet or not. I've never done a lean-to roof this big. All new to me!

That is a nice location you are at, I would love a waterfront lot especially at a lake with good fishing for bass and bluegill. So jealous! Good luck on your project

Started the roof rafters Friday night and got them done Saturday afternoon. Did the entire thing by myself except for the box-ends on the overhangs. Had to have wifey help me get those 2 end boards into place after I built some temp supports to lay them on. What a chore, holy ****. I have a new found respect for the guys that do framing. Lugging these 18' 2x8's around by myself and having to go up and down a 10ft ladder (what seems like 1000x) was a total pain. I had to bring them up in stages using the fire blocks in the front and back walls for supports on the way to the top. Not sure how much these weigh but they are no joke. Several of them had to be clamped into place before I nailed them and that is why I blocked the top, middle and bottom to have something robust enough to bite on and be perfectly perpendicular. I will not do rafters alone again ever. Cutting the birdsmouth's in both sides was tricky but after I got a nice copy it was easy enough to use that one to cut the rest. Today was a major pain the tail but very satisfying. Like therapy. After I was done with the rafters I went back with my nail gun and just blasted everything again in the walls and up top. It was toe-nail city!

Next is to frame up the side walls in the triangle corners so I have 16" on center for the siding in there and then I can put sheathing on the roof and siding on the walls. I *hope* the worst part is behind me now but you never know. I am considering getting some roof guys out here but I'm going to at least try before I throw in the towel on that part. The sheathing can't be worse than the rafter's right???!!!!

First, I'm no structural engineer or builder, but shouldn’t there be a header board across the front and back of the roof to support the weight of the roof over time? I know you don’t have to worry about snow loading around here.
Second, Hello neighbor! I’m on the Lugoff/Elgin side of Wateree near the dam. Are you on this lake?
My view…

EDIT: I put my shed in the front yard for the same reasons! Also use to fly RC, but gave it up back in 1999.I flew at Ft.Jackson with the Jackson Flyers.

We are very close! I know those Ft Jackson guys and all the Camden guys.

The front wall is built to standard for the most part according to the guy that built my house BUT he has not been here to see it in person yet. All he has seen is pics in no great detail. Hopefully this week he will get around here before I put the siding on it and can fix anything that might be out of whack.

Can't beat the sunsets on the water, right! The crappy part is that the pics do not really capture the moment. They are ok, but being there in person is stunning some nights.

Nice photos. My Father's side of the family is from Camden. I live near Greenville, SC. My Aunt had a house on Hermitage Pond in Camden. She was a big "Fisherwoman" all of her life . She would go out on the pond in a 12' boat at night well into her late eighties.

I fished in that pond a few weeks ago. It is private but I know a guy! They just brought the water back up at the end of last year because it had been down since 2015 after the 1000 year flood we had here in central SC. It was down 8-9 feet for all those years. I understand there was something wrong with the dam after the flood and the Army Corp of engineers had to oversee some changes. That was the rumor, no idea if it was true. That is a huge pond -- it has to be 300-400 acres maybe more. Great fishing and almost no pressure at all. Most of the owners of those huge homes on that pond to the south do not even fish (im told). It could change at any time but it is rare to see anyone fishing out there, even on the weekends but that might be different now. I did not see anyone out there and I was there all day. I crushed them. Stopped counting bass after I got way past double figures. There is a ton of fish in there. :)

More progress. I thought that the rafters were going to be the hardest part but hanging this 5/8 sheathing on the walls is by far the most taxing so far. Of course they are heavy and awkward and because there is a aesthetic aspect to this T1-11 you kinda/sorta have to make sure they are relatively straight/flush/etc. It made it bad that I had to get these from Lowes because my local lumber yard only had 3 in stock and half of these were snakes from lowes. Simply awful, but it was either get these and get it done or skip a full weekend so I wanted to make progress. Anyway, 18 down and 4-5 more to patch in upper portions to go. This is some good therapy and it was only about 95 degrees out here - feels like 105!!!! 😓😓😓

Looking good! I have to agree, the humidity has been horrible this summer. We started out with May-June drought and low humidity but July came and we’ve had lots of rain, high humidity but temps were lower than June.
Can’t wait to see the joys of August.

So busy at work and it is not letting up but was able to do more yesterday. Got the 1/2" sheathing on the roof with the synthetic roof underlayment. I would have liked to have painted first before the doors and windows but I guess I will just tape them up when I get to that part. Getting there but way behind schedule due to real work.
