And the price keeps dropping

Some may remember I posted this about a month ago, and the guy was wanting something like $49,000. :scared:

Well....he's still trying to sell. I can't remember what he was waiting for to come in he ordered, maybe the side cab, or top section, but he has dropped from $49,000 to $32,000. I don't know if it's worth it. I do know Snap-On is like gold when buying, but a $17,000 drop seems like a heck of a drop.

No real importance of the thread, other than fodder for S-O chat.

Carry on :rocker:

It's worth whatever someone will pay for it. But to be fair. I've got probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $26,000 in tool receipts. Not including the 2500 or so in free tools that I've got, and my collection is nowhere near as nice or as big as this guys. So I could see where he would be wanting the kind of money he's asking. Not sure he'll get it. But I know if I was ever going to sell id start high too

That is a good looking box and fairly full. Wrench sizes to 21/5" has me flummoxed though.

In this economy you have to get real lucky to have someone lay out that much cash at one time, especially on tools. It's hard enough to get people to pay cash for a car.

It looks to be a nice set, but who has that much cash on hand would not go out buy new. My only guess would be a professional tool resaler, but I bet that is way to rich for their blood too.

I really like the color combo of the box. Anyone willing to loan me a large truck and about $30K?

So, any guesses to why he's selling EVERYTHING? I'm guessing it must be something sentimental....family member, dog, etc.

B/C no tool guy like that would sell everything. They'd keep basics and sell the rest off if they needed money for bills or what have you.

Hell, maybe he's starting a new business and has absolutely no use for tools anymore. Maybe his hands got hurt...who knows.

It happens. One of my guys went to school part-time for business management. When he got the degree, he went to work at a Kroger managing the produce section...sold off everything except for the Craftsman stuff he started with back when he was a teenager.

There aren't enough people with that kind of money wanting to get into the business.

If he truly wants it sold as a single lot he'll have to reduce it more. It sounds in the ad like he is getting panicky.

He needs to split that up and he'd get more than he's asking now. I've seen many of these sorts of big tool sets. I'd be inclined to buy something like this only to split it up and resell it myself.

Some folks just don't have the ability or knowledge to sell properly. He probably has a tool account bill as big as a house and little income coming in.

When he first posted the ad a month, it may have even been two months now, possibly longer (summer has flown by) he said the box at that time was only two weeks old, and he had just ordered either the top or side cab for it and was waiting on it to come in.

I thought $49,000 was high. And not too many have that sort of cash laying around, and I seriously doubt a bank will loan that sort of money for a toolbox and tools.

In a week he went from $49G's to $45G's, then down to $40g's. Now he's down to $32g's. I'm thinking he possibly lost his job, or maybe a divorce, and has to come up with some fast cash.

I'm not a tool collector, so I don't know what he really has as far as money. I do know if he has truck brands, then he has some significant coin ******* in it just in the tools alone. I'm almost betting if someone offered him $20-$25k cash, he would ****** it up. Dropping a price $17,000 is a hellish price drop so far in itself. ANd I understand advertising it high, but I would never advertise something that I would drop the price $17,000 unless I was desperate to get rid of a house.

Well, he is getting desperate it seems. Just in a couple of days, he's dropped it to $30K. It may be getting to the point before long where he will accept a ridiculously lowball offer http://dayton.craigslist.org/tls/4606924335.html

I went to S-O's site and added things up. Just the box arrangement itself is $32,380.00

WOW and OUCH!!!!!!

Would a part out of this size equal or surpass his initial asking price?

Person must have fallen on hard times. Ouch.

People like me who buy collections and part them out will probably start to get interested in the low to mid teens. I see 20k there easily. However, I also see months of work to get everything cleaned, IDed, grouped, and listed. It will take a lot of man hours and you will have your money ******* for a long time.

I'm sure it has happened, but I have never seen a mechanic buy a whole set for his personnel use. Mechanics who have the money to fork over already have most of the tools. Guys starting out who could use a massive set like that don't have the money. No bank that I'm aware of will give you a loan anywhere close to that big to buy used tools.

Hard to say. It looks like a nice collection of tools. I would be willing to believe he has $50-60k or more ******* if he bought everything new off the truck. Just eye balling it I would say $20k on the resale market.

The devil is in the details though. It also depends on what is in those boxes. If he has a brand new scan tool, with all the software, keys, etc that can be $5k-7k right there. Some of the large wrenches look like they could be craftsman raised panels. That would take hundreds to thousands off the tag.

Perhaps he is selling off some of the collection and that's why it went cheaper. Offer the guy 12k and come to a final price of 15 or 16?

Yep.

And Yep.

And K54 summed up the rest. :)

Overbuying in a good job scenario only to find out you are tossed out the door a year later when an owner folds. moves, sells or consolidates.

See it all the time. As do S-O drivers.

It's tough out there.

Maybe the guy retired? Ever think of that? Its tough to say the worth without looking at it up close. Probably around 20k retail new deffinatly over 60k. I have well over 100k in my tools at work but i have alot more then that and a bigger box.

That confused me at first too, I think he meant 2 and 1/5" just sounds more realistic

As far as I know, a 2-1/5" wrench is not a real thing.

He just has no idea how to type out wrench sizes and fat-fingered the last number on the keyboard on top of that. I bet the wrench at the top end is 2-1/4".

Selling off an inheritance?

Got hands caught in a wood chipper?

Sentenced to prison?

Assigned to foreign military service?

Diagnosed with terminal illness?

Ex-pat returning home?

Someone should call the guy and ask him what the deal is.

I did. Said got a different job at same place and is on a service truck that provides tools.
Other details;
Box was bought in April, tools have been bought over the course of 12 years.

More details:
Did not accept offer of 7500 cash :(
next bidder...
