Socket adapters?
Friction ball placement is closer to one end than the other.
On the 1/2" one, one ball is larger than the other.

inserts for female square drive ratchets would be my guess. proto as well as others made them.

Looks like what we used to put in tee slots of a stamping press to make moving dies easier. The dies had a solid bottom plate with cutouts for scrap to fall through,

My guess is a reversing ratchet (maybe low profile) where one pushes the detent thru to the other side to select Fwd and Rev. No reversing lever on this tool.
