I have three angle grinders: an old Milwaulee, an old Makita, and a newer Ryobi. All three seem to have different sized threaded studs for the attachments. Why the heck is there no industry standard so all attachments fit all grinders? :headscrat

The standards that I'm aware of are 5/8-11 for 4-1/2", 7", and 9" grinders and 3/8-24 for 4" grinders. Haven't seen anything else. what's on yours?

I don't know...I was looking through all of them today and trying to put together one with a cut off wheel so I can cut some sheetmetal. Maybe my eyes deceived me, but I thought I saw three sizes. I will check tomorrow to confirm.

The 4" Makita's use an M10 (mine anyways). A lot of wire brushes etc. come with an arbor adapter.

i guess i've never had a 4" makita, i know my 4.5" is the 5/8 x 11, as is my POS harbor freight backup. Good to know though since I need to pick up another makita, just don't see the paddle switch ones in regular stores, and i don't think about it often enough to order it online.

See, you people had me second-guessing my eagle eyes, thinking maybe I did not see the sizes of the attaching posts correctly. But, I am vindicated: three grinders, three different sizes. WTF?

Look at it this way:

Isn't choice wonderful??

Beta or VHS. The market will determine what stays and what goes away.

Well, which of the pictured sizes has gone away and become obsolete due to poor market performance? :headscrat

For model numbers, I'll have to go back out to the barn, which probably won't happen until tomorrow after work.

From left to right: Makita, Milwaukee, Ryobi.

I know the Ryobi is 4.5", the others I do not know.

I was asking so I can look them up and see what the sizes are. I myself have never seen anything other than m10 or 5/8". Post up the model # when you get a chance. Thanks.

My guess is the Ryobi is a 7/8. I have seen discs marked with a 7/8 arbor but never a grinder.

7/8" center hole on discs is very common for 4.5" and up discs. Never seen a 7/8 spindle on a grinder, not even a 9". Weird....

Sure that image isn't photoshopped?

:spit: Haha! I don't even have Photoshop. Really, that pic is totally legit.

Maybe I can take the Ryobi on a "Grinder Freak Show" tour to supplement my income.

Here are the numbers:

Ryobi AG451

Milwaukee 6145

Makita N9514B

Seems the Ryobi and Milwaukee are both 4.5 inch and the Makita is 4".

I have the same spindle on a couple of my Milwaukee grinders as well. It may be 1/2"?

I think about all of my Makita 4" are metric (10mm?) and the discs will have a 5/8" center hole.

The milwaukees in question I "think" use a 7/8 center hole like the 5/8 threaded grinders as well.

I have some Skill 4 1/2" disc grinders that use a 3/8" threaded arbor

I think I may even have a couple of other 4 in grinders that may have an even different spindle thread?

You win the prize for most **** (and I mean that in the nicest way possible) in the smallest amount of space. Wow... Or do the pics just make it seem like it?

I could use a larger shop if anyone wants to donate.

not to hijack the thread or anything but...
my friend let me borrow his 4.5 inch or so metabo angle grinder. hands down the nicest angle grinder i've ever used. what i really liked about it was the tool-less ball bearing detent adjustable guard. well, the metabo grinder is anywhere from $180-ish to $250. i dont like the grinder that much. i cant seem to find any other manufacturer that used the same ball bearing detent adjustible guard. anyone know of one?

dragging up a 3 year old thread looking for a solution... I've got 4 grinders that I use regularly...and all but one have a 5/8" - 11 spindle... I like to keep one with a grinding rock, one with a flap disk, one with a cutting wheel, one with a wire brush

I've got one Milwaukee 6145 with a 1/2" - 13 spindle and have to use the flanges to hole the flapdisk on it. I have a load of threaded flappers that I can use but won't fit this grinder and I'd love to get rid of the flanges and that funky spanner wrench...

anyone know of a adapter that will screw onto a 1/2" spindle and size up to a 5/8 ????

can't seem to find anything but 5/8 to 10.2 metric (or whatever)

thanks
John
