CLIFF NOTES: Found a product that repels raccoons (at the very least) and works as advertised. "Bonide Shotgun Repels-All". And no, it's not a shotgun.

We have an 80 x 100 indoor riding arena. We've had a terrible time with ground hogs, skunks and raccoons burrowing under the walls. The ground hogs were the worst as they actually dug tunnels under the footing and horses were punching through. We're lucky none got inured. It got to the point that we spent $3500 for a ground penetrating radar survey to find the tunnels so I could fill them in.

I was able to snipe the ground hogs and they have stayed away for a while but then raccoons moved in. They were climbing up into the rafters and pooping on top of them. The poop piles were so big that I had to get up on a ladder to scrape them off. Every morning, there are fresh '**** tracks in that building.

This guy was pissed off because I was in there with the tractor dragging the footing:

Yes, I could have sniped them also but I really don't enjoy killing the wildlife. I prefer to live and let live until it gets to a point where there's no choice. And this is about how I was able to solve the problem without all that.

Yesterday, my wife was hosting a big retreat for a women's business group. We had to do a lot of prep and set up on Thursday afternoon because they were going to arrive at 8:15 on Friday and we didn't want the raccoons climing all over the lunch tables and everything.

So, while we were prepping on Thursday, I remembered seeing a product on the shelf at Tractor Supply that was supposed to be a repellent. I decided to make a run to the store, pick some up and give it a try. There were actually several products on the shelf and the one I had originally seen was an Ortho product that only claimed to repel a few animals. There was another product called "Repels-All" so I read the label and it included damn near every kind of critter imaginable. So I bought a jug and high-tailed it home.

I sprinkled the granules around the entire perimeter of the building, paying special attention to gaps and obvious holes where they were gaining access. I also sprinkled some in the 3 holes on the inside of the building. It's smells like garlic, which makes sense as that's one of the main ingredients, so I guess it repels werewolves too (or is that vampires).

I dragged the sand footing so that it was all uniform and called it a night. The next morning I went down there and was blown away. Not one single foot print. The stuff worked. Same thing this morning.

The stuff is supposed to last for a couple of months unless it rains hard. I plan to keep some on hand all the time and just do a maintenance sprinkle every few weeks just to be sure. But this definitely seems like a good alternative to trapping or shooting. Shooting them requires time laying in wait, unless I happen to see one and can get a rifle before it disappears, which is really rare. And trapping requires checking traps several times a day. This repellent took all of 5 minutes to apply. I can live with that.

Repels-All lists rats as one of the critters but doesn't specifically list mice. But I'm going to try some around my house too and see if we can't keep the mice out this winter. I set six mouse traps in my basement and have not caught a single mouse in several days so I'm not sure if they're outside enjoying the beautiful weather or what. But it can't hurt to try this repellent too. Oh, and the barn. Can't forget the bar. Tons of mice in there.

Hope that helps someone in a similar predicament.

Best thing for mice is a cat. I'll have to check into this stuff for my parents. They live in the country and are battling opossums and raccoons at the moment. Their cats are keeping the mice away, but they aren't doing much for the larger critters.

I agree that a repellent is the easiest solution for most smaller intrusive vermin. Where I live, this time of year brings out the larger critters searching for food and water. To that end I bought a single barrel .410 shotgun with #4 shot for my wife and she generally takes care of things, except the rattlers that she leaves for me to dispatch and dispose of.

Does it work on cats?

My next door neighbor has at least fifteen and counting that seem to want to live in my backyard. Can't say that I blame them. My yard is much nicer than hers. Blasting them with my sprinkler system is only a temporary solution, though it's kind of fun to watch! My apologies to all of you cat lovers!

Cats will not come around unless there is something to hunt.
If you get rid of the rodents you will get rid of the cats.

This is true on a size basis.
Squirrels and below.
A raccoon far outweighs a cat and they will not take on the fight.

My wife has dispatched two nuisance cats over the last couple years using our little .410 shotgun and 2.75" #6 shells or 3' express #4 loads for feral cats that were fighting with our cats over the food supply, thus causing expensive veterinary bills. Living in the country, we have the blessings of the county animal control.

I wonder if it works on bears. I can't keep a bird feeder up or a compost barrel as the bears come at night and destroy them.

I've been spraying the plants the deer seem to like with Deer Out. Works great, but has a strong odor until it's dry. Mrs. LS6 hates it. I wonder if the Repels-All granules will keep the deer from eating the plants, or if I need to use the liquid spray version directly on the plants??

Can't help with the compost barrel. Bears love stinky stuff. The stinkier, the better. They used to wreak havoc with my neighbor's garbage cans when they had used diapers in them...

My bird feeders are 9.5" up in the air on aircraft cables run through pulleys on tree branches. I lower them down to fill/clean and then crank 'em back up when done. Yogi and Boo-Boo haven't bothered them in 15 years...

On rats and mice at least, repellent generally will not work if they have already taken up residence. If they lose their nest, they will almost always die, so they will ignore any signs of predators. Only thing you can do is trap the ones inside by barricading the premises and then killing them with snap traps.

Human is cheaper and readily obtainable. (And before everyone goes "ew!", it works, since the critters know we are predators.)

That's exactly why they sell the urine. It's the sole purpose why its on the shelf. I have 3 pit bulls that would piss all over human urine but they even stay away from the ones I've used.

I do that and it works. Just use a different spot each time you go around the edge of your yard to keep the critters away. Don't do this if you have neighbors in eyesight.

We've tried them all, and none has worked so far. Wolf, coyote, mine, repel-all, deer away, etc. Nada. I just spread some repel all and one cat went into the flower bed to sniff it, and the other went to the fence to smell it. Lead cylinders work better on the varmints. The cats will just have to die a natural death.

Electric fence? I have 2 low strands of wire, one 3-4 inches off the ground and another 5-6 inches above it. Have one more chest high for deer. Worked until this year and it seems one deer has learned to get around it, will have to rethink that. If horses are a concern, I've seen numerous horse fences that are electrified. I don't have horses so mileage may vary. I haven't had any experience with bears and I'd like to keep i tthat way.

I "Had" a Skunk/Opossum/Raccoon/House Cat problem. Notice I say I had. They have all moved on to other homes without a Paint Ball Gun or a determined home owner. Rubber Balls or Colored Fill, they move fast, but not faster than a 200 ball hopper full. Nothing Funnier than seeing a pesky house cat covered in Orange Fill. Just my .02.

I have a major problem with Armadillos, I've tried live trapping but they don't seem to respond to any of the baits that I've put out. I've also got problems with '*****, 'possums and stray cats, I live just outside the city limits and animal control will not assist with any of them. In this area, most stray cats carry feline leukemia so it's best to keep them away from any pets you may have. The ones I trap usually take a trip to visit their country cousins. But I'm thinking about taking them all over to the mayor's house. May be something will get done about them then.

I have an update...I saw footprints in the indoor arena yesterday morning. So, either the Repels-All stopped working or the raccoons were just on vacation for a few days and it never worked in the first place. I'll try putting some more down and see what happens.
