Very nice, what are the details on the top? Did you lay it up yourself?

I was thinking of doing the same thing too! But instead of a stool, I've got a recaro seat that I want to fab up so it'll be nice and comfortable.

Beautiful! It will be a shame to do projects on it and ding your nice butcher block top up. My nice shiny things loose their sheen in about 2 hours of ownership.

Thanks for all the kind words.

Whiteydogone, you're really not gonna like the matching cabinets I'm about to build to the left then. ;)

The top is made out of 10' pine 2x4's. It ended up being about 9'9" long and 30" deep. It weighs about 160 pounds. I glued it up in three pieces so I could run it through my planer. That way I only had two seams to sand smooth. I used four pieces of thread-all to hold it together. It helped during fabrication and I think it helps add strength. I finished it with five coats of tung oil. I realize it will get banged up, but I have two other work benches. This is before I glued the three pieces together:

Very nice! Beautiful job on the wood top. Wished I had a planer, then I define fly would make my own when the time comes for a new bench. May have to run by the pawn shops & see if they any planers.

Did you make a metal frame for the boxes to "sit"in?

What kind of cabinets are those above? Or did you make those.

No, the frame is 2x4 pine wood.

The cabinets came from Lowe's. I was going to build them, but I had a 10% off coupon, so it wasn't really worth it. I will build the cabinets that are going to the left, however.

I'm also planning on getting a new stool. :rocker:

Great solution. Agree, it is a work bench, not a dining room table. Did you face/joint the edges before sandwiching them together?

I'd like to see some more pics of the bench top progress. Good job! I may have to copy...lol

What did you use to cover the holes where the allthread went?

What did you use to finish it?

Again, looks GREAT!

Yes sir Parrothead, I made all of the cabinets to the left, including the rail and stile doors. First time for everything. The cabinets above the workbench were purchased from Lowe's, but I think I matched the door pattern pretty close.
