Another Air Compressor Question

My Makita MAK5200 died a few days ago. I bought it new in 2006 and used and sometimes abused it for a long time. I ended up buying a Quincy QT54, upright 60 gallon 2 stage, and use it a lot more than the Makita. Well, I pulled the Makita out to run an air nailer and found that the tank had a leak where the tank is welded to the cart frame. I'm tempted to replace it with another Makita 5200, maybe overkill, but it did the job for me for lots of years. I also have a DeWalt battery air compressor that is good for very small jobs. Right now I'm tempted to see if I can get by with the battery compressor until a need arises for more portable capacity. But when I need more than the battery compressor can provide, would it make sense to get another MAC5200, or something else? I want to be able to run an air tool, but more than likely the most I will run is 1 or 2 roofing nailers or 1 framing nailer. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

since you have time, I would keep an eye on classifieds and watch out for a deal on one .
if you buy the same model at least you have some parts , maybe even find one that is missing something... just be sure you get a good tank tho! LOL

Yes, not good to ever attempt to repair an air tank yourself. Once it develops a pinhole use something to put bigger holes in it so nobody tries to salvage it after you throw it out. I fully cut mine into three pieces with my torch set up when I have to throw one out. There are many people who have been seriously injured by air tank failures and I’m sure a few deaths. Nothing to mess around with at all.

I haven't seen those compressors but someone gave me a compressor once that they fixed a hole in the tank. Looked like they stuck an inch thick blob of jb weld on it and you couldn't even open the drain anymore. No way I was using that. But I kept it and eventually ran across someone selling the same compressor for $15 or $20 but didn't work right. Swapped the parts from mine onto it and tank problem solved!

Unless you're certified to weld on pressure vessels never do this.
