Anyone ever put the water trap between the pump and the tank. I was thinking run a black pipe line about 10 feet or so and then back in to the tank.

Wouldn't this risk atomizing the water and injecting it back into your air stream?

I would be concerned putting pipe between the pump and the tank. Although your intentions to cool the air would be good, my concern would be the pulsation on the piping in this part of the system. As the compressor cylinder pushes air out in pulses it will cause the pipe to pulse and possible vibrate. One of the purposes of the tank is to dampen the pulsations (and to hold air to keep the compressor from running all the time).

That's where Quincy recommends I add one to my compressor. Right after the after cooler and before the tank. Of course the model they suggest I use costs as much as many pay for a compressor.....

To work it needs to go pump - cooler - trap - tank.

For most uses this would work. For painting - blasting I would still have a downstream filter at least a Motorguard toilet paper style one or a snake. Anything that would get by the system will condense in the tank and could cause issues.
