Hi GJ experts. I'm looking for some advice. I've finally had some time to sit down and begin thinking about the interior design of my shed. I'm concentrating on one half of the shed as this will be the concreted floor workshop and storage for ongoing projects.

I've played around with Sketchup a bit and come up with the following. You'll notice a mezzanine in there that'll cover about 40m2 of the workshop with an approx ceiling height of 2.8m. This should allow for plenty of room overhead to mount some lighting for underneath the mezzanine as well as room for bonnets to open etc.

I'd like to have room to easily pull a car in for a service without having to move the current projects (2 Mazda's at the moment). This is where the silver Mazda is now.

Looking for advice on stair placement, I'll need about 3.6 to 3.8 metres for the stairs to get the height I need. However I don't want to impinge on workshop space or bench space too much but am thinkin of building in under the stairs for storage etc..

My first thoughts are running a small section of steps, say 1/3rd of them, directly in front of the forward most orange RX7 and turning them, with a platform, to then run up alongside it. This puts the mezzanine access point right in the centre of the shed where the roof is at its highest.

Any ideas? The two orange cars in the pics are projects and the silver 4 door is the everyday car. The ute is the every-other-day car and may be used by me when the wife has the silver Mazda, or vice-versa, so it needs to be easily acessible.

Hi there, time for my usual Saturday evening update.

Had a lot going on this week including having a week off from work. My wife is spending the week down at the Royal Show with our two stud heifers and I've spent a little bit of time down there as well but in between this I've been able to get a few things done.

I organised a mini-mix truck to come in with 1.2 m3 of concrete to finish off the end posts. That all went to plan so I've started putting up the end purlins.

Our iron also arrived so today my dad and I started putting on the roof. We finished the rear section today and will get back into it tomorrow if the wind holds off. It got a bit windy today but we pushed through.

I'm extremely happy with the colour of the iron. It's got an industrial look to it but should be a nice contrast with other colours we use around the place.

The roof looks fantastic, good choice of colour as well.

One question although it a bit late now, did you consider putting foil or insulation under the iron?

BTW the is quite a number of our locals over at the Royal this week as well.

Mrs 1/2 Cup will be showing her pup at the Melbourne show in a week or two.

Regards..

Thanks 1/2 Cup. I did think about foil but decided against it. Mainly because it doesn't get anywhere near as warm where we are than closer to Adelaide so it's rare that it'll be too hot to work out in the shed.

The Royal Adelaide show is getting pretty big these days. We were lucky enough to snag a 3rd place ribbon with one of our girls so my wife hasn't been able to wipe the grin from her face. Very happy with it.

I also came across this beast at the show. Do I just need to mention 'Blitz' and Plushy miraculously turns up??? :) It was apretty complete unit including doors and wipers. Although the doors look like they've been made up later on. And no canvas.

Congratulations on the place in the show. They get a lot of entries.

Speaking of Blitz trucks there is one not far from here or should I say just the cab section that has recently been used for garden art at an entrance gate to a property near here, looks great I might add.
I must grab a pic next time I am out that way.
There are a number of others around this way as well.

Regards..

I could hardly see the point of it either since I opted for skylight panels as well.

... but it does prevent condensation drips in the lockup section of my shed.

good enough to eat huh ?? .. ;);) .. :D

If the signwriting on the door is genuine ... then I bet that ol girl could tell some stories ..

I guess Plushy will pop in any time soon. That looks like the Tom Kruse Truck.
Tom Kruse is a well Known outback mail man from the time before 4wd in the outback was easy.

:3gears: :Twitch: I was just looking at a photo of this same truck over on MLU . Tom Kruse is a bit of a legend for driving thousands of miles through the outback delivering mail in old blitz`s and other old trucks .

She is a pretty good looking Monkey face and very complete . i am guessing F60L with 20 inch tyres . :D

Your shed progress is coming on nicely and i like the mezzanine idea .

Spot on Plushy, it's definitely an F60L which is why I got so excited when I saw it.

I couldn't say if this was an original and honestly I've never head of Tom (redfaced)

Carves - The judge was very impressed with her meat quality but this girl won't be getting eaten. She'll be AI'd with a quality bull and her progeny will be eaten :)

Thanks again for the comments on my progress. I've just finished off all the end purlins so pretty much ready to get back to work on the tin, once the wind drops off. Next weekend is looking perfect so fingers crossed.

Just thinking about your stair situation - what are you hoping to store up on your mezz? I store flat materials and also items like christmas stuff and magazines on mine and just use a ladder to access it.

Could you get away with at attic ladder setup, so you don't sacrifice floor space to a full stair setup, or would it be too cumbersome to get items up there?

Who did you buy all your purlins and tophats from?
I got all my c purlins from fielder's. An uncle works there which is great.
great work. love the area you are in.

Good point sandman. Was just discussing this with my wife today, what we plan to store up there. It's going to be a bit of everything however I did fail to mention that on the end of the mezzanine I'll make access for the loader so I can lift up pallets loaded with stuff that are too hard to carry up the stairs. This means I could look at an attic ladder or steeper stairs.

Had a really productive day today and the weather was fantastic.

Finished the roofing iron and got started on the rear walling.

Had this much done by lunchtime.

And the roof is finished (except for the barge and ridge capping)

1 and a bit bays of wall. As you can see here the rear wall runs along an electric fence line for one of the horse paddocks so I've had a couple of sessions of shock therapy with this build. A few weeks back I went to climb the ladder and the spanner I had in my back pocket caught the fence. This happened again today and it hit me right in the right **** cheek. It gives a pretty solid hit, especially when you're holding onto the ladder. Not fun.

MMJkTL.jpg

I've be using my Dewalt 18v Impact Driver and it's been working perfectly however I've noticed on the roof that when it pulls the iron up against the purlins the purlin is denting the iron. I've been ok with this on the roof but I'm not really happy with it happening on the walls.

1fk4UX.jpg

I pulled out my dad's Makita Impact Driver which has the adjustable clutch. This allows me to not go in too hard. It does a much neater job so happy with that.
Also I'm thinking the tek screws I've got have probably got too big of a head for corrugated and this is probably not helping either. But, I'll continue on tomorrow with the Makita and see how it goes.

Enjoy.

Great progress, looking more complete every post.

I have seen shed erectors do pilot holes first to get the teck in the centre of the rib, this can be a PITA ( excuse the pun ) but makes for a neat job.

You have to be careful using a battery drill as you can over torque the screws very easily.

I don't believe your screws are too big.

I have an old Ryobi electric teck gun that has infinite adjustment and I use this in preference to a battery drill any day even on plaster board.

Keep up the great work.

Shouldn't your Teck screws be on the top of the ridge instead of in the valley of the corrugated iron?

Scott, when you attached the roof, did you screw through to the purlin via the ridge or the valley in the sheet?

If you screwed through the valley, you will need to give every one of those screws a dob of silicone ASAP.

Sorry for the short and sweet reply above guys. I just wanted to respond so everyone could sleep at night knowing I didn't stuff up :)

You don't usually screw into the ridge on the walls for two reasons. The first is the sheets are vertical and under a slight eave so the chance of water running down the ridge enough to get through is slim. And secondly you don't need to use the longer screws on the walls.

I didn't do anything exciting on the shed on Sunday except for put in more tek screws on the roof. I hate that job but it's gotta be done.

It was definitely not fun screwing the end of the sheets into the 200mm fascia beam as this is 2.5mm thick compared to the 1.5mm purlins. I had to pre drill the sheets and beam and the tek gun still got a little too warm for my liking.

I did do something much more exciting 'IN' the shed though. Well, kind of in the shed.

I went down to my dad's place and we loaded a second tractor on his truck so we could bring my tractor to my place and unload them both. My tractor has been sitting on his truck for about a month, waiting for the roof sheets to go on so we could bring it up. We are also getting a few rolls of hay in the next week or two so I've 'borrowed' one of his beasts, who we call 'Huffy', so I can unload the semi. It was also a requirement to unload my tractor as it's not running so we have no brakes or steering.

Loaded on the 'Louis. Yes we removed the hay forks when transporting
j80NKr.jpg

The 'Little' Johnny. It looks really small in the shed but then again she's not a big tractor. For those interested it's a John Deere 2130, late '70s model, with a 239Ci 4 cylinder Diesel engine putting out around 66hp at the PTO. It's obviously got a loader attachment on it which is the main reason we got it.

It needs A LOT of work and the engine has been started and run without oil in it. Funnily enough thats the reason why we got it. It was meant to be sold in a clearing sale but the guy went to drive it down to the location without checking the oil. He quickly shut it off but the damage was probably already done. So I got it cheap. If it was running it'd be worth close to 10grand, or more if it was much tidier. Jsut hoping the crank is ok.

Plans: Full resto back to a working and functional tractor.

Another boring update. A very productive weekend again but a couple of visits from friends and family slowed progress down somewhat.

We managed to get the back wall and both end walls up. I still need to finish off some of the screws during the week but we're getting very close.

The next two weekends won't see a lot getting done with a trip to Perth, and my dad's off to Melbourne so I'll have to try an find another helper.

Thanks guys

Hapi - Great to see someone not far away. Are you in the town on on a property?

It's a great place Strath. My dad and I always said we'd by a big property down there one day. Was only saying that last saturday when we went down to pick up some hay from Sandergrove

Hi Playwme, sorry for the late reply. Not rude at all. Although I'm not going to tell you exactly how much, just an indication if thats ok :)

I'd have to check the wife's spreadsheet (as it's on our property it's a tax deduction :)) but we are nearing the $20k mark for what you see here. This includes approx $8k for all the C purlins (uprights, trusses, purlins, beams including beams for mezzanine), $9k for iron and ~$3k for sundries (steel for brackets, bolts and hardware, rod, door rollers etc)

Thankfully I've got contacts for most of it, for example the purlins and iron is all at around 50% off retail price on average. If I paid retail I would never have build it this big. And I'd probably go for zinc next time and paint the damn thing. You'd save a lot of money there.

That doesn't include the cost for the door materials (65mm Gal RHS), door track and concrete.

More than enough info. I've got my own little 40 acre retreat out of town and something like this needs to be on the cards soon. Maybe not as high though. Like yourself, I generally don't pay retail either. Don't think any of my neighbours have those nice toys like yours do though.

Yeah the height is definitely up there. I needed to able to drive a flat bed truck with a cattle crate in there and possibly a horse truck in the future for the wife. My dad's got a couple of older sheds with height issues so I made sure I got it right the first time.

You might have to just buy yourself an excavator, bobcat, loader etc etc :)

Awesome :) Great size, great cars :)

Not far from my place too. I'd love to move somewhere down that way with some more land some day!

Hey Vortex, where abouts are you? It is damn lovely down our way this time of year when everything is still green.

Nothing wrong with a Mazda or two in the shed thats for sure :)

Damn right :) I'm looking at picking up a cheap RX8 at the moment as a long-term circuit racing project car, I just wish I had a bit more room! :)
