Does anyone know if an older 5hp motor could be used to power a Model VR 10-12, Champion compressor? I know this a big comp and rated for 10hp. I can get a blazing hot deal on the pump right now, but fear my current 5hp motor won't pull it. Different pulley/flywheel sizes or Ideas? Hurricane Michael added water into my current 3 cyl Curtiss and now it makes a terrible rattle so I am looking at possible replacements. Ron

That looks like a VR-30 pump. Minimum hp is 7.5. Too little hp and the pump doesn't turn fast enough to lubricate properly.

How hard do you use your compressor? Depending on your needs you might look at one of the HF 5hp pumps. They are by no means going to replace something like a Champion pump but they are very low cost and the 20% off coupons apply. One of my brothers is using one with a 4hp motor as a replacement for a Colman 3 cylinder pump. For a home user his 80 gallon, ~135 max, 13 CFM (as estimated) setup is quite a bit of capability.

I think with a 5hp motor they are rated at around 17 cfm, 145 psi. If your objective is save money and the risk associated with a pump failure isn't too bad this might be a good option. If the cost of a shut down is far higher than the cost of the pump... probably best to move on.
