Another compressor question...

There is a Campbell Hausfeld Compressor for sale. It's a 5hp, 80gal, 2 stage compressor. The guy selling it described it as a 3phase motor. But, when I look online for the model # CI053080VA, I can't seem to find it.
I can find similar C.H. compressors and the electircal supply is described as 220-240 / 460... does this mean it is indeed a 3 phase or that it can also run on single phase 220-240?

Some smaller compressors are rated electrically as dual voltage 110/220, so it makes me wonder what the meaning is of the "/" in the case of this particular compressor.

Thanks.

I don't think that particular compressor was sold as a three phase model originally, but motors can be changed. The only way to know for sure is to look at the spec plate on the motor.

when i was shopping for compressor, i found a ton of motors that were single and 3 phase all within the same model compressor. So i think you'd really have to see the motor plate like Zrexxer said. Grainger and McMaster Carr both sell electric motor fairly cheap($250-$380) for most 3-5HP single phase compressor motors. As for the dual voltage, I have a C.H. that is 110/220. Im not too sure about 220-240/460, but that last time I bought an item that had the voltage rating, it was 3 phase. I'd guess that it is 3 phase. Also, drop the letters of the part number and you can generally find it. McMaster.com, Grainger.com, NorthernTool.com should all have a search window. http://www.mcmaster.com/#electric-motors/=bjm5v6 <----look at the right motor. it has the rating you're asking about, and it's 3 phase

The motor in the photo is definitely three phase, there are no capacitors or a large capacitor box that you'd find on a single phase motor. If a motor is rated 208/240/460, it's a three phase motor, it can only be run on single phase with a rotary or electronic phase converter. You will also need a magnetic starter as well.
