Another Compressor Thread... (Kellog-American)

Howdy All,

I sure haven't been doing my part in adding to these forums at all since I have joined, but I sure have learned a ton - thank you all for that.

Longer story shorter, my neighbor asked if I would replace his rear struts for him on his RAM 1500 which I agreed to. He said he would compensate me for it. I'm 19 and I don't mind trading a little bit of time in between classes and work to help a neighbor out for some gas money.

Anyway, later that day he invited me over to show me "Something". He then continued to show me an old blue compressor stored on the side of his garage. He said that it worked previously and that it just needs to be hooked up and turned on. I got to looking at it as I love air compressors. One of the labels read Kellog-American on the tank. The motor reads Leeson. I'll post a picture below.

Initally I'm not too jazzed about this whole deal as the motor read that it was only 1 HP. Immediately I assumed that this would put me somewhere in the 3 CFM range - not ideal for my purposes.

Do any of you recognize this model? Is there any advice you have for me whether or not I should go through the trouble of getting it running. It is horizontal and looks to maybe be slightly bigger than my black craftsman 27 gallon.

Here it is, what do you all think?

Thanks,

Matthew

Thanks for the reply shawnspeed,

I'll take a picture of it as soon as I get it over to my house and clean it all off. Maybe I could connect the craftsman and this one together to combine their CFM.
4.5 - 5.5 is about 7 or 8 at 90psi no?

Anyhow, I'll get pictures up ASAP. Maybe I'll check it out. I'd like to have enough air power to run an air buffer. If that is out of the question for my budget when I start doing bodywork I'll just stick with electric.

Thank you again,

Matthew

I'll have to take a better look at it when we get it out of his garage. I'll post some pics then.

Thanks for the help

For the record, it only says Kellog-American on the compressor pump. You can see what's welded onto the tank I have never heard of Brunner eng co. before this.

Thanks again,

Matt

Bump. Familiar anyone? My correction, it does have a regulator made by Furnas with it. I'd really like to source a belt and see what I can do with this guy

If it says Furnas on it, it isn't a regulator in the usual sense. It's a pressure switch to turn the motor on when the tank pressure falls below a certain point and off when the pressure is high enough. Depending on your application you'll probably want an actual pressure regulator to drop the tank pressure to something lower for painting, tire inflation and blowgun use. It doesn't have to be expensive.: Sears has cheap serviceable ones for example.

BTW I have a Kellogg American that's the big brother (5 hp two stage) of yours. It's been a fine machine for me.

Thank you Gregg. Do you have any idea where I can source a belt for this guy?

Belts are usually something you buy from a local supply house. Try googling "bearing supply" for your area. Get the motor bolted down with the bolts in about the middle of the slots so you'll have a little leeway in both directions for the belt. Then use a tape measure to measure around the outside of the pullies. Make sure you pull the tape as tight as you can. That will be close to the outside diameter of the belt you need. Also measure the width of the pulley grooves. Then go to the supply house and give them the measurements and tell them how you made them. They'll sell you the right belt. Occasionally the belt you get might be one size too long or short and you'll have to go back to the supply house. But this procedure usually works foe me.

I have a biggger Kellogg-American that my grandfather bought new for the business in 1946. It has been in continuous use since then and has never been apart, just oil changed. It is on it's third 80 gal. tank, though.

Wow, that is impressive. Good to hear I might have something decent here. It looks like it'll lack big time in the air delivery category, but maybe I'll rebuild it, get it looking all clean and give/sell it to someone just starting out.

Great looking dog by the way.
